CofC is legit man. I knew they were good, but they seem to be WAY ahead of the pack going into conference play. Reminds me of our 16/17 team.

Hofstra got a nice win on the road at Stony Brook 71-64

Delaware with a bad loss at home to Delaware State at the buzzer 73-71. (DSUs first win over a D1 opponent)

Hofstra has clearly moved into that upper tier right alongside Charleston and Northeastern. It's pretty much those 3 teams and everyone else right now.

I'm still not a fan of Mihalich, but there's no doubt he's built a quality roster. This win over Stony Brook was their best of the season thus far. And its the kind of road win that proves they have the potential to roll through much of the CAA competition when it gets going.

For those off work today or working from home Northeastern has an afternoon tilt versus St Bony at noon on CAA.TV

Did you not expect Hofstra to be in the upper tier? They were picked third, and they don't have any bad losses. The great thing for Hofstra is allowing only 68.9 points, albeit against an easy schedule. Last season Hofstra allowed 77.3 and got the 3 seed. Hofstra scored 71 at Stony Brook even while going 5:12 without scoring.

Northeastern won 64-59. St. Bonaventure made only 2 two-pointers in the first half. The big news is that Vasa Pusica returned. I don't remember if I read he was going to be out 4 to 6 weeks or 6 to 8, but today was 33 days after his last game so even if it was 4 to 6 he came back in the earlier half of the range. He had 16 points and handled the ball a lot with 7 assists and 6 turnovers. He returned early enough that if he doesn't miss any more time, he will pass 75 percent of his team's games to qualify for statistics by the end of the season. Donnell Gresham, who was their point guard with Pusica hurt, played 36 minutes and had 3 points and no assists. He was averaging 12.4 points and 4.3 assists.

I knew Hofstra would be good because of JWF, but I assumed the loss of Gustys would have some kind of impact. I'm also with 08 on Mihalich, not sold on him. That team should've gone much farther last season. The two losses to us can't be justified IMO. Maybe they'll be able to flip the script this season.

The replacements for Gustys don't shoot much, but shoot well. At almost every second, exactly one of Jacquil Taylor or Dan Dwyer is playing. They're both graduate transfers, but I read Hofstra might get a second year from Taylor. Taylor is averaging 4.8 points, 7.6 rebounds (ninth in the CAA), and 1.4 blocks. He leads the CAA in blocks, and Hofstra has never had the CAA leader in blocks. Dwyer is averaging 3.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks. Guards JWF and Pemberton are combining to average 9.5 rebounds, which is up from 8.0 last season. Hofstra allows only 31.1 rebounds. Only 21 of 353 teams average fewer rebounds than Hofstra allows. Hofstra defends threes well, doesn't commit many turnovers, and doesn't miss many free throws. Those could make it hard for their opponents to come back in the last minute or two. JWF and Desure Buie can both be point guards. JWF shoots free throws .847 and Buie shoots them .943 from 33 of 35.

Heres how our non conference opponents finished.

Campbell just won the Big South Regular season title. Gets to host the conference tournament.

UNCG and Davidson should finish 2nd in the SoCon and A10 respectively. Furman is 3rd in Socon and Gardner Webb is 4th in Big South. Mercer is in the lower middle of the SoCon.

Stanford looking to finish in the middle of the PAC 12.

Ark St ended up being a bottom 4th Sunbelt while Ga St was 2nd Eastern Illinois was Top 5 in OVC.

ECU finished 2nd to last in the American and UNC might win the ACC

All in all a really tough non conference slate

McGrath needs to take a page out of the Keatts playbook and schedule a much easier schedule (but please no Non-D1s!). Need to build confidence early. We already have games with Stanford and UNC next year.

I disagree. There’s no reason to play cupcakes just to pad the win column. I like them playing tougher competition. Sure, we didn’t benefit in the win column but we saw some impressive growth from Toews, Sims, Estime and Gadsden. I understand where you’re coming from regarding confidence but I still prefer tougher OOC games as opposed to the garbage that Keatts scheduled.

A shame you guys didnt have the team this year because of your schedule. You got quite fortunate to catch 2 of the top 3 SoCon teams in a year they are having the best year, probably ever. But schedules like you have is what good teams should be aspiring to schedule. Get good mids with a buy or 2 (I know the UNC game was a gift but still). Then all you have to do is perform decently and you are in the conversation for an at large.

I'm not sure about that. I hope so.
