That’s a solid OOC win for you guys. St Joe’s is the A-10 preseason #2.

Delaware's start this season is very impressive. Martin Ingelsby appears to be doing a really nice job for that team. Nice wins over Cornell and Louisiana Tech, with their only losses coming against Maryland (by only 6) and UNCG.
And its not like he's doing it all with Monte Ross' guys, either. 3 of their current top 5 scorers (Kevin Anderson, Ithiel Horton, Matt Vereto) were players he brought in.

Ryan Allen should be back by the start of conference play too. Going to be a tough team in the CAA for sure.

Hofstra fell to the median of the RPI at 177th, and with their next 2 games against winless teams they could be 6-3 with an RPI in the 200s after that.

Our OOC schedule has been pretty impressive as far as quality. We still have to play UNC, Furman and Ga State. Furman is now a top 25 team and just destroyed Elon last night. Ga State just beat Alabama, and UNC...well.

This has to be one of our tougher OOC schedules by far. I prefer this to Keatts' lineup

Keep in mind, when KK was here, we were much better and a bigger threat, Ie. MUCH tougher to schedule tough mids, or good majors!

Keats is getting blasted for the weakness of his OOC schedule. But I seriously wonder if maybe that is the right way to do things. With our one-bid conference, does it really matter how tough it is? Would it maybe be better to get the team in a "winning" mode if for nothing more than to build confidence? That mentality worked here with Keatts.

To answer your question... no. Obviously it doesn’t matter when you’re in a one-bid conference. However, that’s not the only reason to schedule tough opponents. Understanding we’re going to be the underdog in a lot of these OOC games, they still schedule a tougher slate of opponents to get the guys better. Playing against top talent only serves to make you better. Even in a loss you can learn.
Does that mean we want to get beat and rolled over just for experience? Of course not, but playing Stanford, Davidson, UNC, etc you’re gonna learn through adversity a lot more than you will by beating Mt Olive by 20-30.
IMO, its a good thing and the fans get more excited about big teams than they do for some weak D1 or D2 opponents.
One of our biggest complaints as a fan base during KK’s tenure was his weak scheduling. Now we’re on the other side looking at green grass for various reasons.

You raise a valid point. Keatts philosophy of creampuffs plus 1 big away game led to a 13 seed and a 12 seed. Would a tougher non conference scheudle have changed anything? It wouldn't be wrong to assume no, especially because the deck gets stacked against mid majors more and more every year.
In the Brownell era, you could get into 16 team tournaments like the Preseason NIT and play your way into some big games on neutral courts. Now, most preseason tournaments have a 4 team major tier and a 4 team mid major tier so those neutral court opportunities have been lost.
However, i still believe you gotta play games that will challenge you. If we are a one bid conference regardless, why not challenge and prepare yourself as opposed to pad your record

KK certainly should take a hit for scheduling D2's. However, i don't think he would have gotten quality P5's or, Davidson's if he wanted too. We have always had difficulty with scheduling when we were really good

In Keatts's last year, had UNCW not won the CAA championship, we could have been an at-large team with 28 wins IF one or two of those wins had been against High Major teams. As it was, we would have not made the tournament without the championship.
So in my mind, better to play a tougher schedule and risk a less gaudy record than to beat up on teams for wins that nobody other than yourself thinks add up to anything.

I don't get the mentality that a 1-bid league should schedule WEAKER teams. If you're one-bid regardless, challenge yourself with games that will be even tougher than league play will be.
If you're preparing for a Marathon, sure, you have to start incrementally with 5 and 10 mile runs. But eventually, you need to be able to run, say, 30-40 miles. If you can do that, then running the 26.2 won't seem as hard.
A mixture of easy opponents early on and tougher ones later on is ideal. That's not always possible with the way majors like to schedule their games. And the minute a mid-major gets good, majors no longer want to schedule you. But I hate having to schedule non-DI opponents just to get teams to come to Trask.

Welcome to mid major basketball. When teams WANT to play you, there is a reason for it. When teams AVOID playing you, there is also a reason. With a few exceptions, major teams are looking out for themselves. If it does not benefit them, they are not going to be interested. But this is also why teams like Davidson should be targeted. Good mids should always be the focus for the top teams in the conference. Those type of games are available and can generally be gotten in home and homes. Mids wanting to pick off average or above average majors while good themselves is just not realistic, at least not in the current or future landscape.

RE: CAA Non-Conference 2018 - 2019
I don't know that either answer is better. I was simply pointing out that Furman, GSU, UNCG, Stanford, UNC have all turned out to be really good so far.
I think as a new coach, with a new system, playing easier teams allows you to run the offense and defense you want in real time instead of practice, and allows you to make adjustements without the pressure of losing. In Keatts case, properly running the press, it makes sense to perfect it against weaker teams. In our case, I wish we would have used our easier games to run more press and traps since our defense was/is suspect.
The benefit of the stronger schedule can bee seen at Furman, who just broke into the top 25 with some big wins on the road. But, that was following a really good year where they started in a better spot.
If we improve and learn to play better against tough opponents, and that leads to wins in the CAA, fine. If we just take a beating and aren't improving, not worth the mental beat down. Not expecting anything against UNC, but we really need to get a win against Furman or Ga State to prove the tough schedule leads to wins against quality competition. Right now, we don't have a win worth mentioning.

NU and Coen have always seem to be able to play Power 5 teams and have a good OOC schedule.
He really focuses on it because he feels it benefits NU come league play.

I'm planning on slipping each UNC-Ch player a handful of Claflin before the game tonight to, you know, mellow them out!
