Well. One game in and it’s great to have all our resident basketball experts weighing in!

It’s year 2 of the McGrath Era, and while I don’t feel like it’s a produce W’s and championships or you’re gone season, the seat will get toasty if there aren’t some improvements on last year. There are certainly a few things to be excited about, i.e. schedule, his recruits, and offensive improvements.

The defense and in game coaching adjustments are improvements that need to happen, defense being the most important. Those of you around during the Keats Era should remember he was hard headed as they come and a lack of coaching adjustments in-game and some players seeing court time led to some significant losses. In the end, he was still successful.

Hopefully coach McG can get this righted before it gets out of hand. Someone said yesterday the most important thing is how we finish and compete in March. I wholeheartedly agree.

Anyways, stay civil and classy and here’s to a new season of Seahawk basketball!

I sincerely doubt that. Wayyyyy too early to even be thinking about hot seat talk. Even if we perform about the same as last season. That's not setting the bar low, it's simply saying we all need to be patient, like you're advocating.

We haven't had any off-the-court incidents or academic concerns since McGrath arrived (knock on wood). Without that stuff going on, and with C.B. already having made it clear he wants to be here for the long haul, you have to give him a VERY long leash to show improvement. He's committed to the program and its improvement. We need to be committed to him as well as a program.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I fully expect C.B. to start to realize the Roy Williams method doesn't work at this level of basketball. You're not going to flood the court with more talent than the other squad, so if you're playing fast and maximizing the # of possessions in a contest, you have to do something different on defense that the other teams are not doing.

So for those that have issues with C.B.'s style, you have to remember where he came from, and recognize that it takes time to develop your own identity as a coach. I'm not trying to knock Roy Williams too much here, just saying that he has a way of doing things that works for UNC, but doesn't always work for the guys on his coaching tree.

What a joke dude. That is a lot to take away from one game and not mention a guy went off like a cannon. It's the first game of the season and you are calling out poor leadership? Give it a break.

And I'll also add that, when you've lost natural pessimist jumpinmullet, you've lost the war. If you've done that, you need to take a serious deep breath and relax a bit.

I can agree with all of that, to include the divergence from my thoughts on the hot seat. I agree it probably won’t be there, but at the same time wouldn’t be surprised if it is because that seems normal in the sports world. It’s always a “what have you done for me lately” mentality.

Wes Miller y’all. Like ‘08 said before... remember how long it took him to evolve to a mid major style. McGrath played at and has only coached at (prior to UNCW) elite levels and has that mentality. I agree that he will come around because he just seems like he’ll be a good coach, but it’s definitely going to take time.

While I agree that McGrath will not be on the hot seat this year, he will not get as long of a leash as Wes Miller got at UNCG before showing results and championships. Expectations and history are higher at UNCW and considering Miller took over as an interim coach with a program that was in the bottom portion of D1 teams.

With that being said I still think McGrath can get it done this year. Better to peak later than earlier.

I agree with everyone’s sentiments about jumping off the bus way too soon. However IMO he SHOULD be recognizing that some things don’t work at this level already and making adjustments. If this doesn’t start to show by mid season with defensive strategies I will become a Bit restless and lose some faith in him. Like others have mentioned, offense isn’t an issue and IMo he’s brought in some guys we have reason to be excited about. If he can’t coach D or make adjustments, he needs to bring an an assistant that has that background to help him do so
