Down 5 and Taylor hit a clutch 3. This was a game we should have won. But we have a good team. They gotta learn to not turnover

UNCW 18 TO's and gave up 11 steals
Campbell 7 TO's and gave up 3 steals

That's a difference of 19 posessions

Clemmons scores 44 points.

A little ironic to see a press style beat us. The team needs to hold there heads high and learn from this one. There was definitely effort. I wish we would mix it up on defense a little. Hats off to Campbell's coach as he called the right plays. It's still hard to not be disappointed when lossing to Campbell.

We have a good balanced team on offense, but if we don't learn how to stop people, it's going to be another long year. They had two guys score 70% of their points, TWO. We knew this coming in, yet both those guys got open look after open look. We have to learn how to defend the perimeter, it was a problem last year and it most certainly was a problem tonight. Ty, was Ty tonight, as was Devonte. Estime was the unexpected bright spot tonight, he could prove to be a key contributor. Towes had some really good moments, but also some really bad ones. My guess is we see that at times from the freshman.

Heck of a battle for the first game, and for a place that was half full, it got really really loud! Side note, Campbell's coach if a freaking Spaz! I sat in the second row at center court and he was amusing to watch.

RE: @Campbell 11/6 - ESPN+
So these were my biggest takeaways from a game that I'm hoping we can learn a lot from.

1) I thought Jeantal Cylla was atrocious. I can't remember such a selfish performance from an individual for UNCW. Multiple times he took on double teams instead of kicking out to the open man, took bad shots, looked lazy on the defensive end in the 1st half, with his effort picking up in the 2nd. I don't doubt he has all the physical capabilities to be the "CAA Newcomer of the Year" but his play tonight was extremely disappointing to me.

2) I was impressed with O'Connell. He might not be flashy but he is about as fundamentally sound as they come. Always seemed to be in the right place and I loved his effort. I would like to see his minutes upped, if not moved into the starting lineup in place of Cylla. I see him helping us quite a bit this year.

3) McGrath as much as anyone needs to learn from his mistakes tonight. He made some questionable decisions, that I didn't quite understand. I don't want this to be taken the wrong way because I have faith in him doing so. He grew as a coach during last season, I'd expect him to continue to do the same this season.

4)Ty Taylor is cold blooded, Jay Estime is much improved and really impressed me. His growth since last season was the best thing I noticed tonight. I like the new PGs. Mistakes will be made, but ultimately I think we're in good hands going forward. DC15 is DC15, nothing to worry about there.

Lastly, tonight was disappointing, no doubt about it. Keep in mind, the goal is not to beat Campbell in game 1, the goal is to be capable of beating any team we face in Charleston come March. We're on to Stanford. Wings Up

I listened to the game. It sounded a lot like listening to a game from last year - we scored tons of points, and they scored more. It sounded like they made a ton of lay ups. And it sounded like trying some zone couldn't have hurt...

RE: @Campbell 11/6 - ESPN+
We were told last year that the problem with our defense was that the existing players had never been taught the "fundamentals". In other words, it was Keatts fault. So, i'm wondering, what was different tonight after a full year with the blameless coach and the ability to teach the fundamentals? We had one player score 44 points on us and we made ZERO adjustments on defense to stop it.

I also don't like to hear EVERY game how if the PLAYERS just did their job, the outcome would have been different. Guess he didn't learn to take the blame for losses as a coach like Ol' Roy does.... I know some of you like it for some reason, but its' a sign of poor leadership to me.

Not going to abandon ship after one game, but this wasn't a good start, and it only gets tougher. Davidson, Stanford and UNCG are all capable of administering a beatdown.

What I am still left wondering is, what's our "style" of play? What do we hang our hat on that we can expect to see game in and game out as fans? Right now, it looks a lot like last year. Hope that Cacock or Taylor go off and we somehow win. We've got a big problem though. Both of them will be gone next year. Hate to say it, but if we don't make big strides as a team overall this year, next year is going to be a drop off. Right now, our style looks a lot like Benny Moss and Buzz Peterson. Score a lot but can't defend.

Y’all are going over the top on this one. Clemons torched us, yes. Would have liked to have seen them throw a bigger player on him like Simmons and he could have altered his shot. I’ve not seen Simmons play but based on size and wingspan alone he provides the best potential as a shut down wing.

O’Connell needs more minutes. Highly active and seems to have a natural feel for where to be. Off the bench or not he needs to be on the court a lot.

One thing that irks me is CB talking about every possession counting. I agree but how about when your PG is trapped at half court with 5-7 seconds left in the first half. Burn a use it or lose time out and run an inbounds play. We wasted that possession at the end of the half. I know it’s Roy ball but don’t be that damn stubborn.

And y’all are crazy if you want coach to come out and say the players played great and just weren’t coached well enough to be put in a position to win. Talk about creating a soft team. He’s asked to break down the game and he gave a pretty honest assessment. It’s the first one of the season and we played pretty poor defense at times and I expect him to demand more out of them.

Perfect example. The Princeton backcut by Clemons in the middle of the lane where Taylor was burned. That killed us down the stretch. I’m sure they showed them that cut and similar cuts 100 times in game planning. It’s execution that broke down.

I wasn't questioning the defensive strategy of McGrath. I actually thought they did a decent job of throwing different people at Clemons to make him work. Clemons is a star, he torched us, I can live with that. I guarantee we're not the only team he does that to this season. Put aside Clemons' performance, the rotations didn't make much sense to me, especially in the 2nd half. McGrath kept going back to Cylla when it was evident in the first few minutes of the game that this wasn't going to be his night. With the way O'Connell and Estime were playing, I don't understand how he played 30 minutes. It seemed like every possession was doomed when he touched the ball, and we were playing with 4 on defense. Also, C.B. subbed out Ty Taylor midway through the 2nd half after he had a run of several straight baskets stretching our lead to 7. Campbell then went on a 12-0 run.

There's no need to talk about last season, Buzz Peterson, or Benny Moss. This team is talented. The defense will get better, the coaches will figure out the rotations, and we will limit our mistakes going forward. These are normal problems for a basketball team to have in November, especially when you're adding 5 players to the rotation. Like I said, we need to learn from our mistakes and move forward. I am 100 percent confident that C.B. and his staff will have the guys ready by the time conference play starts. Which is what really matters...

I agree with everything you said. My response was more directed at those who basically wanted C.B. to apologize for some defensive woes in the first game of the season and have his players' backs for performing poorly on a few defensive possessions that decided the game. It's his job to hold his players accountable.

All good... I just wanted to clarify what I meant in my earlier post. I gave C.B. a pass on everything last year, but I plan on being more critical of him this season if it's warranted. That team has too much talent to not compete at the top of the conference.
