If Va Tech were to lose to Pitt this week, they would be on the brink of elimination from the ACC CCG if not already over it. They would also be in jeopardy of not becoming bowl eligible because of not playing the East Carolina game.
NC State isn't likely to make the CCG either, and they took ECU off the table as a potential 12th game during championship week.
Do you think they have someone in mind for a 12th game if they need it to be bowl eligible? Perhaps Southern Mississippi who also could find themselves one win short?

I would hope the AD is talking with some G5 schools now about a makeup date. As you say, if VT loses to Pitt they can virtually forget about the ACC CG anyway - might as well schedule that 12th game. Of course, gotta beat at least one of Pitt, Miami or UVA just to get to 5 wins...

Akron would be one to call. They had their game against Nebraska cancelled for weather. Southern Miss is another possibility. Marshall and App State would be possibilities, but both are still in the running for their CCGs.

Probably a good idea and you have to assume the AD's office is quietly weighing options and will soon make calls if they haven't already.
Akron has struggled in MAC play but wouldn't be a guaranteed ticket to bowl eligibility for the Hokies. They won @ Northwestern and lost by 13 @ Iowa St.

If Akron gets by Eastern Michigan (5-5) this week, they may not need a 12th game to become bowl eligible. They have Bowling Green (1-8) the following week.
They still might want a payday, though.

If I'd been smarter, I'd have realized that Akron already has a game on 12/1 against South Carolina. Southern Miss might be Tech's best option.
They might also consider getting Liberty involved by buying out their game against Norfolk State (which wouldn't help Liberty's bowl situation anyway).

Couldn't VT and NC State play each other as a 12th game?

NC State already committed to hosting East Carolina (the team that bailed on VaTech) on 12/1.
Tech needs a home game.

My bad as well. Southern Miss has been eliminated from its CCG race, so they would appear to be the ones to call.

There is some talk on our boards about us maybe buying out Norfolk St to replace it with VT. With our loss to UMASS our bowl chances are almost zero. It’s all rumors but a lot of talk about it.

There is another possibility that would be highly unorthodox, but not unprecedented. Virginia Tech could offer UNC a payday to come to Blacksburg for a non-conference game. They played earlier in Chapel Hill (VT winning 22-19).

Have you heard that as a possibility some where or did you just make it up? Also, I don't think we could beat UNC in a rematch since it was a miracle we beat them the first time.

I haven't heard anyone suggest this. There aren't many folks here with less inside info than me. It's just a third alternative they may want to consider (along with Southern Miss and Liberty). A couple of independents are playing each other twice in a season to achieve the required number of home games.
There are two considerations here: bowl eligibility and attractiveness of opponent. If they would sell out their stadium regardless of the opponent, then they only need to think about who they might be the most likely to beat. That's probably Liberty. But this could all be moot if they don't first beat either Miami or Virginia to get to five wins. That's not a lock.

He's safe. So, is Fuente.
That's not to say the Hokie fan base is handling this well. Quite the opposite, they whine and complain and want everyone fired. Whit Babcock is a good enough AD that he's not going to put your job at risk over one bad season even if the fan base is demanding it.
This is not the kind of season we wanted to have going into next years home schedule without a marquee opponent. The first time in almost 2 decades. We wanted to be building to a good team and have the fans engaged so that they would buy season tickets regardless of the bad home schedule. As it stands, I think next years average home attendance will be the lowest since we originally expanded Lane to 66,233.
This is next years home schedule.

How did VT end up with 3 of the 4 NC teams coming to Lane in the same season?

You aren't joking. I thought UofL's 2017 home slate was poor for grabbing casual fans, but it did include Clemson. That is not a list that will excite people on the fence to buy season tixs.

And I'll bet a few Hokie fans won't be happy that one of their four away games is a return game at East Carolina when the Pirates bailed on this year's scheduled visit to Blacksburg.

UNLV played at Hawaii this year and only have 12 games. They have an opening on Dec 2. However, it seems like VT may not win another making it all moot.
