We are at it again!
It is November and the football team is playing for national ranking, a better bowl game and a potential shot at the conference championship. CLK has done a lot in 2 years, now sell it a little to the student body and maybe
saturday night is a sellout at Nippert. Quietly 2 of this year's games are in top ten of attendance already. Oh and the basketball team plays the school from Columbus on campus for the first time in 90 years. Give 'em heck bearcats.

I'd love to see it sold out. But I seriously doubt it. The bandwagon fans have an unending supply of excuses and it won't take much more than the thermometer to keep them home in front of their big screens. USF won't bring many fans either and UC won't have the high school bands and military contingent we saw Saturday.
Growing our football fan base has been a steady, but slow, climb.

The fan base is there and it's bigger than most think.
The PROBLEM is that too many of them are of the fair weather variety that throw a fit and bolt when things don't go their way. Then it takes darn near having to win a national championship to bring them back.

All season long the students have packed the student section. There is very little selling to be done. You need to sell the general public in Cincinnati. As with every game... The students will be there.

I agree completely about our students; they've done an exceptional job filling seats and really cheering for the team; best in program history.
I've had a longer view than many contributing here so I really see progress. I remember UC hosting Vandy years ago and I think attendance was announced as 6,000 and change, but I'm not sure there were that many there. And there were plenty of empty seats the night UC knocked off #7 Rutgers, taking the program up a notch for sure.
One of our challenges is perception. It's easy (and a hindrance) to look 100 miles northeast and wonder why we don't fill just 40,000 seats every week. Our two institutions are still very different. Major urban universities are better for comparative attendance and neither Pitt nor Miami (FL) routinely pack the fans in, even with the added benefit of P5 membership.
Given the progress on the field, I believe the day is coming when UC will be mostly full, most games. Our hard core (myself included) are there for the games; the incremental attendance improves as it becomes fashionable to tailgate, associate with a "winner" and be part of the scene in Nippert.

We averaged 28,000 to our home games in 2017. That is about an 8,000 person increase since 2006. The fact we still managed 28,000 in the midst of some of the worst football in two decades shows that the fan base is growing.
My freshman year was in 2006 and the first home game I went to we were laying in the student section, and some of the older guys were buying me beers. It was a relaxing afternoon. Now students are filling the section, standing and yelling for the games. We have come a long way. I'd love to see us average 35k and with some continued success I think UC will be a saturday tradition. It just takes time, and I think we have leadership in place that does understand how to build it.
