We wouldn't schedule up, more like a home body bag game.

So why shouldn't Marshall or Southern Miss try for one more home game?

Hearing Akron is going there.

Already a done deal

The Gamecocks will host Akron in Williams-Brice Stadium on Dec. 1, the school announced Friday. The game replaces a September meeting with Marshall, which was canceled because of Hurricane Florence.

I'm shocked it's Akron. They're on the bubble just like us.

Looking at their schedule, it's very likely they will be coming in to that South Carolina game with a 5-6 record.

I’d prefer to play USM again this time in Huntington.

Va Tech just lost to Boston College this weekend, I don't see them winning their division. I expect in 1 week we'll hear a VT vs S Miss match up is in the works.

VT isn't very good, so S Miss could actually win the game.

There could be more, but here are the FBS schools with an openning on December 1 that either Marshall or Southern Miss could play...not a lot of options.

Likely away opponent:
North Carolina
VA Tech

These are the FCS schools who had cancelations due to Florence, IDK if any are due to qualify for their playoff, but here you are...

Home game:
Tennessee State
Hampton

The remaining FBS schools with openings are all in contention for their conference championships.

As far as FCS, I assume you could schedule any non-playoff team with a reasonable home payout.

Surely you aren't talking about UNC. They are 100% out.

No, UNC and VA Tech are schools that are available, yet are out of contention.

Schools that are in contention but open include UCF, Appalachian State and WVU.

No, we should not play. One more win and we are bowl eligible so no need to risk further injury and secondly, if you want to give back the insurance money, feel free to play.

Well that's what I wasn't sure about, is that a 100% accurate? It looks like that's not an issue for many of the other schools who have rescheduled. I don't know if they also have insurance policies against this, but it looks like they're only a very small handful schools left that haven't either rescheduled or played another game.

At this point I think it's weak sauce if we don't try.

Someone posted it over in HerdNation (I think it was Rifle) that we would forfeit any money should we pick up a 12th game. I have not, however, seen a direct source.

But that’s the thing, I’ve only seen that thought on the Marshall boards too.

It’s groupthink, and consensus. But is it accurate? That IDK.

It’s not affecting anyone else.

I respectfully disagree. You play to win.

We are in no position to turn down any bowl opportunity.

However, this is just a discussion, so I’m not gonna beat you up for your opinion. And I fully expect our admin to continue to sit on their hands.

Can't play an FCS school and help bowl picture since we've already got the one allowed win. Akron took the SC payday on 12/1, so playing SC is out, ECU took @ NC State, ECU would have been our best option. Teams that still need a game, UCF, Va. Tech, App. St. and So. Miss. If App St. & SO. Miss. want a game they'll likely reschedule for 12/1 their canceled game. That leaves UCF and Va. Tech. neither would likely be a win for us and would have to be played on the road. Should WVU lose another game and get knocked out of Big12 Championship they might want a 12th game in Morgantown. Basically I don't see any good options to pick up another win.

I listed the teams earlier. UCF, WVU and Appalachian State are not gonna schedule considering their contending for respective conference championships.

There are two available FBS teams. UNC and VA Tech.

Two available FCS teams. Tennessee State and Hampton.

UNC would have to be @ Chapel Hill, given their 1 - 7 standing I'm sure they want to end the train wreck season and fire their coach. FCS game would do nothing for Marshall except risk injury.
