Should Marshall and/or Southern Miss schedule a final home game December 1?
This is what I know:

If MTSU beats UTEP and UAB beats Southern Miss next Saturday Nobember 10, both teams (Marshall and Southern Miss) are mathematically eliminated in the conference title chase.

It’s possible a final home game against a non-playoff playing FCS team could be had on Saturday December 1 (CUSA Championship weekend.)

What I’m not sure about is the insurance payout complication.

Does anyone know or can confirm whether or not playing a 12th game cancels any insurance settlement for our canceled hurricane games?

If not, and I were administrators at these schools, I would work as hard as possible to land a soft agreement with an FCS school on that date.

I vote yes, thoughts?

USM has already played an FCS team this year. We could get a waiver for a bowl I guess, but that’s pretty weak. USM is also hosting the high school football championships that weekend, so unless we were playing in the CUSACG, or Alabama, our stadium is out of service.

They could schedule games against FBS teams too. Others are trying to make up games.

What unfortunate timing.

Well in Marshall’s case, I don’t think we have anything scheduled at the Joan that weekend, if they do, also unfortunate timing.

I HATE that our administration sat on their hands for our open bye week in lieu of “rest” to ultimately lose the following weekend.

Yes, but our payout to an FCS team for a home game in Huntington would likely be less than an FBS team.

For a budget strapped program, I would think gate for either game would only hit around 15,000 that time of year, so that payout matters.

I’m curious, if you vote “no,” why?

A player's career and seasons are short enough as it is. If you have a chance to play you play. Doesn't matter if its road, home or neutral site.

USM could do something really special with a neutral site game. Have a portion of proceeds to charity etc.

If Marshall is 5 - 6 NO! A 6 - 6 Marshall (assuming they win should not be in a bowl). At 6 - 5 possibly but the game would have to be scheduled soon so no way of knowing where Marshall will finish so I say no.

NC State and ECU are playing on that date. Not sure why any CUSA team would go up against SC except for the payday. No one needing a make up game would have a chance against SC.

I respectfully disagree. You play to win.

We are in no position to turn down any bowl opportunity.

However, this is just a discussion, so I’m not gonna beat you up for your opinion. And I fully expect our admin to continue to sit on their hands.

Sure...if we were 3-8, of course we woulda gone to USC for the "mony mony"...but why would anyone needing 6 wins to go to a bowl, go to USC to lose?

Already a done deal

The Gamecocks will host Akron in Williams-Brice Stadium on Dec. 1, the school announced Friday. The game replaces a September meeting with Marshall, which was canceled because of Hurricane Florence.

Not sure if this is viable but it'd be nice to build in a "snow day" into the schedule between the end of the regular season and the CCG to give everyone a chance to make up games lost to weather or other circumstances. If nothing else, your two top teams get a week to rest for the CCG.

So, this is kinda like scheduling your own Bowl game at the end of the season, huh?
