I'm no expert on athletic department budgets, but that money doesnt seem to be that much when looking at the grand scheme of things of bringing in ticket sales, TV numbers, merchandise, enrollment, etc. Increasing the rest the salary for the rest of the staff would be needed as well. Of course eventually you get outbid by the OSUs of the world, but still need to deter the Iowas and South Carolina types.
I would think the pool for assistant salaries would be the bigger bone of contention, and will be as long as the big P5 schools are paying several million dollars to coordinators alone.
Fickle isn't leaving UC to become a coordinator at Alabama or Texas. He just left a job as coordinator at OSU to come here. So that's not really the issue.
No matter what you do, OC at OSU or Michigan is a more desirable job than OC at UC. So that's not the issue, either.
We're trying to make it so that OC at UC is equal to OC at Purdue and Kentucky. We're not there yet, but I think right now we're close enough that no one's going to leave a safe job at UC for the slight upgrade of going to a Purdue/UK type job.
Hinshaw, Gran, and Clinkscale all bolted to UK from UC, and Clinkscale took a demotion from DC to position coach just to move on IIRC. I think Fickell's salary ranks what, around 60th for college coaches in D1?
When you're a career assistant, the money is much more critical, not to mention the fact that they were working for a coach who was not exactly a spring chicken. Taking the money and hooking up with Stoops was a smart move. They got $'s and a better lifeline.

I think you and I are in agreement. I should have been more clear. I don't think Fick will leave for a coordinator job elsewhere, but his coordinators might (Freeman may be a prime candidate after this season). Continuity is important when you don't have the resources to compete with other P5 schools. It killed us when Tubs was around, especially with his CEO style. The last year, a first year OC with little collegiate experience and a second year DC who previously was an assistant was a recipe for disaster. We'll never be able to afford a $2M coordinator, but we should have an assistant pool that can compete with all but the top ten of CFB.

Right, but nothing we do will be able to ever stop our Coordinator from leaving for OSU, Texas, or even Michigan State.
The best we can hope for is to keep our good coordinators from leaving for the likes of Purdue or Pitt or South Carolina. Are we doing that?

I couldn't help myself on this one, from espn bottom 10 today;
10. Lou-ugh-ville (2-7)
I've been working the phones of both the AAC and the ACC to see if we can't add a last-minute December matchup between Louisville and UConn. We'd call it the Big East Congeniality Bowl, and honestly, the game would take a backseat to the postgame handshake between Bobby Petrino and Randy Edsall. It would be like that scene in "Avengers: Infinity War" when Thanos met the Red Skull, only scowlier.

Not that a transfer would have to be a local, but I can't even think of any high profile kids on their roster from greater Cinti - regardless of whether they are looking to transfer. Am I forgetting anyone? Amongst
Kentucky teams, they seem to have conceded the Cinti area to UK.

I love that UL football is in shambles and, yeah, I'm still bitter about conference realignment...I'm a simple man.

I'm not sure why, but I have no worries about Louisville. $14 million buyout - that's crazy money, and shows the gulf between P5 and G5.

Why does it worry you?
If I were a Purdue fan, I would be worried.
But I really don’t think BDF is gonna bolt for UofL

Brohm to UL makes perfect logic. Now where does PU turn? BDF? Hope not.

Purdue is where coaching careers go to die.
BDF sticks around and we slap around Ohio state next season (I hope)

If Brohm goes to Louisville you can bet that Purdue will go after Fickell. This game never ends.

Hard to win when you can't cheat.
I don't think CLF would go to Purdue. He's too smart for that. I can't see him choosing to be on the losing end of OSU, UM, PSU every year. He doesn't put me in the mind of one of those coaches who has a big ego and thinks he could build Purdue into a perennial B10 power.

To get Brohm.
$14M buyout of Petrino
$4M buyout of Brohm at Purdue
How much do college players make?
P.s. Purdue might not be bowl eligible this year.
