It’s a nod to the Army Aviation Museum located in Daleville, not too far from Troy, but I just like the Trojans better. Gives us something in common with USC too!!

Perhaps the "Troylets"?

If it happened today?

Copperheads.

Wooded wetlands around campus are full of them.
Spent a lot of time in the woods around campus and in the woods along creeks in this area throughout my childhood. Ive only ever seen one copperhead.

I would go with something independence based because the citizens of Mecklenburg county were the first in the country to declare independence from England (according to lore anyway)

Lucky you.. I've encountered far to many. Scariest encounter was a timber rattler which I'd never seen in NC until last summer. I was belaying someone rock climbing and it curled up right next to my leg and started rattling. Made it out unscathed thankfully.

Curious, where in NC were you?

Done a lot of top roping and bouldering around Boone and never saw any snakes, although i've heard plenty of stories.

Now swimming holes and rivers is a totally different story.

As to the topic, we'd be the Highlanders of course.

In Texas, I have had a copperhead chase me.

And I have found rattlesnakes in my house three times.

Western fans, no offense, but I'm among those who really feel bad for you that your logo is essentially some letters on a towel.

Can I offer one?

When I think of Bowling Green, KY, I think of Corvettes.

And when I think of Corvettes, I think of the iconic Corvette Stingray.

So, if I was asked to be part of an athletics marketing focus group that would focus on new branding? I walk in that room, and immediately start pushing for

Western Kentucky Stingrays.

And the song played as your teams enter the stadium or arena??? You know it...

Would be one of the coolest nicknames in all of college sports, imo.

Thinking of an athletics department logo something that is a bridge from this...

And maybe the decal on the football helmet would be the Stingray emblem...

WKU Stingrays?

I’m like “The Four Stages of Yeah” on that.

1. Yeah! Cool nickname rolls off the tongue and ties into local flavor

2. YEAH!!!! Keep Big Red and he can drive around the field in the Little Red Corvette after every TD!!! Waving a red towel !!!!! With a towel logo on it and the towel in the logo has a stingray logo on it!!!!!

3. yeah? That would get old in a hurry. And nothing ruins a great song more than being overplayed (see also, “Yeah!”)

4. Yeah! Okay, this might actually work. And if “Rock and Roll Part One” can survive being overplayed as a sports anthem, why not the BIG RED CORVETTE?

*disclaimer: I’m technically not a WKU fan but I am definitely a Big Red fan. I can just see the Sportscenter commercials now if WKU actually laid him off...

Lived within 3 hours radius of Cincinnati most of my life--OH, KY, WV, TN. Rarely ever heard of a snake getting in someone's house.

Been in TX for almost 10 years, and I've heard of it happening probably a half dozen times... but never 3 times in one house... yikes.

To the topic... yeah, snakes seem to be extremely under-represented in the nickname department, given how much more fear they would seem to represent to most people in comparison to, for instance, birds.

......but (during that time) we did have the Charlotte Hornets MINOR league baseball team. THESE Hornets played in one league or another from the late 1800s until the early 1970s.

Wow. Interesting topic. Once our team's name was declared as "Blazers", I never really gave it a second thought. I was good with it. Maybe one time a very long time ago, maybe, I envisioned them with the nickname of "Griffins"...

Griffins would work especially well these days, though mainly b/c of the football program's second life.

I've never really thought about it, but while I like the nickname in general, I don't really understand why it would have been the choice... nothing about it that would make me think "Birmingham."
