Charlotte - Cougars, emeralds, jades, Pilots (First in flight), Zoom (racing), Prime (Banking), Tornadoes, or rustlers

If we were forced to pick a new name, it'd likely be because we grew enough as a program that the San Francisco 49ers got uppity about sharing a name. If that's the case, I'd double down on the region's gold history by being more concise with our name, and become either the Panners or Goldrushers.

I would go with something independence based because the citizens of Mecklenburg county were the first in the country to declare independence from England (according to lore anyway)

On this vein, I suggest:

Charlotte Decs (Mecklenburg Declaration)
Charlotte Seventy-Fives (signed in 1775, plus we're already a number anyway)

At the time it was changed it was the Native American Moccasin not the snake.

And they didn't cave to political pressure. They voluntarily elected to move away from the Native American name long before it became an issue with the NCAA.

UTEP early on was the Texas College of Mines so Miners makes sense. Other names considered in the early days were Ore Diggers and Muckers. In today's culture, a nickname like Muckers gives too much rhyming ammunition to opponents so I'm glad they picked Miners.

Our current Paydirt Pete mascot was preceded by a number of donkeys or burros. First one was Dynamite followed by Jenny, Clyde and then Henry. Burros might be a good nickname but that lends itself to burritos and then we just become diminutive burros or food.

Since El Paso was part of the old west, nicknames like Gunslingers would be good but no longer PC, I suppose.

Some of the intramural teams at Rice back in the day were the Nads. We also had the Rillas.

As a Troy fan, I really can’t think of a better nickname than the Trojans, but I guess you could have the Troy Bombers, with an airplane as the logo. It’s a nod to the Army Aviation Museum located in Daleville, not too far from Troy, but I just like the Trojans better. Gives us something in common with USC too!!

Copperheads.

Wooded wetlands around campus are full of them.
Spent a lot of time in the woods around campus and in the woods along creeks in this area throughout my childhood. Ive only ever seen one copperhead.

Lucky you.. I've encountered far to many. Scariest encounter was a timber rattler which I'd never seen in NC until last summer. I was belaying someone rock climbing and it curled up right next to my leg and started rattling. Made it out unscathed thankfully.

Boogercats!!!

(That was one of the choices when we come Thundering Herd back in the 50's..)
"Boogercats, a reference to bogie cats, a Scottish animal that's "fleet, elusive, courageous."

I really like nicknames that are inspired by something the city/region the school is in is known for. Denton County has one of the largest congregations of horse farms in the nation so I would change "Mean Green" to something like "Stampede" or "Wranglers"

That's one that I'm surprised isn't waaaaaay more popular that it is in sports in general.

I think "Copperhead" is a sports nickname that lost any chance of ever happening more than 150 years ago.

Curious, where in NC were you?

Done a lot of top roping and bouldering around Boone and never saw any snakes, although i've heard plenty of stories.

Now swimming holes and rivers is a totally different story.

As to the topic, we'd be the Highlanders of course.
