For Marshall, if we had to change from Thundering Herd (which I think is one of the great sports nicknames), I’d either honor our city’s namesake with “Locomotives” (Locos for short) given that Collins P. Huntington was a railroad tycoon and Huntington’s prominence in coal shipping, or our univeristy’s namesake with “Judges” (we judge the quality of the opposition’s defense).

I’ve alwyas thought we should nickname our basketball floor the Supreme Court.

For ODU i would choose Marines. The Old Dominion Marines. I know the Navy will have an issue with that but who cares.

Something that is more relevant to the state of Mississippi, like the Southern Miss Nutria Rats

Largest deep-water port on the east coast: the Old Dominion Dreadnoughts.

(I've sometimes wondered why ODU's parent institution, William & Mary, doesn't offer a substantial sum to purchase the nickname "Monarchs". It seems much more fitting for them than the "Tribe").

The Marshall Rivercats sounds like a minor-league baseball team, but I like the name.

Names like Tigers, Eagles, Wildcats, etc. bore me. I like unique names that reflect the local culture.

Yessir. Helmet logo could be a compass star. Mascot could be an old salt in a rain slick.

Blue Wave.

It came down to Blue Wave vs Owls for the school mascot years ago. With Atlantic in the name and the proximity to the beach I think this would of made more sense.

If we had had a different mascot back when we switched with our original night school mascot "Owls", I would have gone with "Hornets". The nickname is tied to the Charlotte region historically after General Cornwallis called Charlotte a "Hornet's Nest" and at that time we had neither the minor league football of the 1970's Charlotte Hornets or the NBA team of the same name.

If it happened today?

Copperheads.
