Might not necessarily be showing up on the scoreboard, but still a pretty disappointing defensive showing. 40% FG to a non-d1 team won't cut it.

Great to see Rob find the stroke from deep. Makes him a much more versatile offensive weapon if he can consistently hit threes.

They’ve made their baseline layups and we’ve gotten lost on a couple switches. I’d say we’re contesting shots better than last year. Hopefully once we figure it out our athleticism will cut that number down.

He seems comfortable in the corners. Passed up a couple open looks up top.

We’ve missed at least 7 layups I think.

Damn. Peterson didn’t miss that one. Contested 1 handed throw down in the face of 2 defenders.

Feels like we've given up points after every basket we make. Not stringing together stops.

Well I’m encouraged we can outscore teams this season. Not the prettiest of games but if we clean some stuff up I think we can be .500 or better in conference.

Question for those that were there: How were we defending #00 Taulton, the kid who scored 20+? Looks like he hasn't shot a three all year so I'm confused as to how he got 16 two-pointers up

He was their “big”. He had more weight on him than anyone on our team even if some of our guys had 5” on him. He had some nice moves in the post and a couple nice slips off screens. Probably one of those guys in HS who was always an undersized big and developed some moves.

Gotcha. That's what I was hoping. Those undersized bigs are always annoyingly crafty.

This team is way better than last year. If the freshmen stick together for four years, they can have a very good team. Last year’s team was painful to watch. Not so with this team.

Also good to know. Hope we stick with it because that zone last year was unwatchable.

RE: Basketball Exhibition vs. St. Thomas (11/1/2018)
Back from the game. I definitely see a much taller team this year than past years and it seems we really pushed the tempo at times (similar to last year but I think we have better personnel in place to do that).

But lots of negatives too - we were super sloppy tonight with a bunch of bad turnovers and way too many missed lay-ups. Maybe part of it was nerves but we were playing a pretty poor UST team.

Positives were Peterson for sure. He absolutely reminds me of Seth Gearhart but Gearhart wasn't nearly this advanced of a player as a true freshman. I'm telling you - he's an absolute steal that I'm shocked we were able to grab away from any number of quality Midwest programs he could have gone to. I liked how Moore pushes the ball up court so he was the 2nd most impressive freshmen to me. Adams and Martin played well down the stretch too and they were the key cogs to give us a fairly comfortable 14-point win at the end.

Williams (Pacific transfer), Parrish (TCU transfer) and Mullins had moments, but all three also struggled at times. Murphy and Millora-Brown each played quite a bit too but I am not sure if either will be huge contributors this year.

I think we have the potential to be a bit better than last year, but we'll need to figure out the right lineups. And while we could be marginally better, I don't think we have the potential yet to be an upper tier conference team.

While I believe this team is way better, i agree they may not be ready for top teams in the conference. Also agree with your criticisms of play tonight. I just think this team is way more athletic and offers much more on offense than last year’s group. Also, we have much more height.

I agree with the criticisms. On Moore, I like how he aggressively drives the ball, but I want him to look up more when he dribbles. He reminds me a little of Chad Lott driving it.

Murphy seemed a little tentative at first. He missed some open 3s but if he can shoot like last year in HS with his new size he’s gonna cause some major matchup problems. He’s about to catch Harrison in height to my eye.

QMB looks like a more advanced version of Drone. Slightly better hands and footwork but still needs some work. He’s young I think he’ll come around. He’s our only real post presence.

Hope the young guys all stick around and stay healthy. Could be a fun 4 years (which is sorely needed in our basketball program right now).

I, too, was super impressed with Peterson, but I think the Gearhart comparison is unfair; he's MUCH better than that-- on both offense and defense. I think he can as good as Egor. He's incredibly long, and is very active defensively and around the boards. Martin is a different player-- much more active and ready to take the open shot. The most important improvement might be in Adams, who has really matured as a floor general and ball handler, and has become a very reliable free throw shooter down the stretch. I still don't like he shot, but he's more prudent in when he takes it, and he's playing with much more control. Williams is VERY active, but still a bit raw, as is Mullins. Murphy has a very nice shot and considerable upside, but he too made a bunch of rookie mistakes, and was consistently burned defensively.

RE: Basketball Exhibition vs. St. Thomas (11/1/2018)
While I was disappointed with Williams shooting he did grab a team high 10 boards with 3 offensive ones and had 3 assists with only 1 turnover. Peterson is a handful because he can handle the ball and so far shows no sign o having a deer in the headlights look. He was already showing signs of being a team leader. Mullins didn’t stand out but then you see he has 15 points.

Downside for me was the annual missing of bunnies. It is incredible how long this has been a problem. The other negative particularly in the 2 Nd half was the number of wide open stand up 3’s we allowed.

Overall it was our first open game since Spain and the first at home. This was the 4th game for St Thomas so there was a bit more of a comfort level for them.

I think you're being unfair to Seth myself. He was 2nd team all-conference as a senior and had 2 30-point games in conference play (including one in a double-overtime win over a good UAB team). He and Marcus Jackson pretty much were the only two players we had for a team that somehow won 12 games. If Peterson can get to that level this year, that would be awesome, but give him time to develop.

Agree with Tiki on Williams. He rebounded well and his jump hook shot was fine.

I do think the team was a bit tight at times, maybe because it was a good sized student section and they wanted to have a good showing.

It will be a fun team to watch. Pera was also more relaxed for sure, even though the officials gave him plenty of opportunities to test that patience.
