RE: Basketball Exhibition vs. St. Thomas (11/1/2018)

Peterson is a handful because he can handle the ball and so far shows no sign o having a deer in the headlights look. He was already showing signs of being a team leader. Mullins didn’t stand out but then you see he has 15 points.
Downside for me was the annual missing of bunnies. It is incredible how long this has been a problem. The other negative particularly in the 2 Nd half was the number of wide open stand up 3’s we allowed.
Overall it was our first open game since Spain and the first at home. This was the 4th game for St Thomas so there was a bit more of a comfort level for them.
I'm not sure the defensive 3-point shooting percentage will be as big of a factor this year. It helps when Ako Adams is your smallest player on defense. Our length will help that defensive percentage improve you'd have to think. I'm more worried about the fact that their 6-3, 210-pound (?) inside guy scored 22 points or whatever he ended up with. Dylan Jones was the only interior guy who was willing to put a body on him I thought and play the physical defense you need inside. The other part of the defense that was lacking at times was our transition defense on an occasional fast break.
We have another home game Tuesday night against St. Beto (actually it's St. Leo but it's Election Night and I just want to raise the ire of a couple of folks here as a joke). It will be interesting to see if we show a lot of improvement in the areas we're harping on.

Murphy, Moore and Peterson can be the core of a very good team going forward. This looks like a team that will improve a lot by the end of the season.

I fully agree that it was a very sloppy game and there was no substitution pattern that made sense for the Owls, but it was an exhibition game so you kind of expect that to happen. While Jack Williams started, my expectation is that by conference play his role will be somewhat diminished. That is actually good news for the Owls because that means that several Freshmen will have earned starting roles and significant minutes off the bench.
Quentin Millora-Brown struggled and seemed a step slow against less than stellar competition. He needs a great deal of work on his footwork and quickness. Drew Peterson was fun to watch and has a little cockiness on the court. That level of confidence was nice to see. I kept wanting to see Josh Parrish assert himself and take over the game. A glint of his skills showed up in the 2nd half but he was not consistent. If UST had hit their free throws I think it would have been a really tight game, but it was nice to see the Owls flourish at the Charity Stripe when they had their opportunities. I thought Tim Harrison contributed well for being on the court for only 13 minutes and Robert Martin had some nice moments as well.
The Freshmen were unafraid to shoot and there was some pretty good ball movement on offense for the most part. We saw no trapping or full court pressing by Rice again...I wonder if it is even taught on South Main anymore....
Ako made his baskets when they most counted at the end of the game to salt away the win, but he did not control the game as a point guard.
It will be real interesting to see who earns additional PT and those that end up on the bench as the season progresses. I am expecting more wins than last year but this is not a .500 team yet. I would love to be pleasantly surprised....

I think Williams looked the part of the senior on the court. The game didn’t seem too fast for him and he rebounded aggressively. His shots didn’t fall at all, even the bunnies. He has a really strange jump shot... I liked him on the court but I’d rather all his shots come from inside 10ft.
Mullins and Moore will get some steals this year. We didn’t have much of that last year but those guys are quick and have active hands. Peterson also knocked a ball away with his length when he was guarding a man on the perimeter and a guy drove the lane behind him.
