More bothersome to me is Seth Davis' comments to Jones the other night (paraphrasing) that he's going to have to win damn near every game to even sniff NCAA. So in other words, do the impossible or watch from home. There needs to be two tournaments, with a title match between the two winners. Something I would never have favored before.

Yeah, that's the problem. We pretty much have to win the Paradise Jam or win @Syracuse and avoid losses to all the not great but dangerous teams (100-150) our schedule is loaded with or it will come down to the fake courts and empty stands in Frisco again. We don't have much luxury of patience. That tournament, at the very least, needs to be played on home courts.

We also have no choice but to be patient. Can't will someone to be better than he is.
The tournament is a disgrace. Period.

Think he was something like 8-9 in the 2nd half, I believe Dave brought that up to him in the post game interview.

It seems a recurring problem with this team and I'm sure many others is having transfers almost every year who are expected to see significant minutes but have not had the chance yet to develop chemistry with the other players. Thus we wind up almost every year with the proverbial " It'll take time to gel" statement. Problem is our schedule is front loaded with really important games which we lose more often than not.
I'd love it if we could get back to the more conventional way of recruiting out of high school and redshirting. Taylor was able to do quite nicely redshirting and building teams with experience right out the gate.

Both of the bigs looked pretty good, but it is clear to me that Dickens has the extreme high upside. He has a very good looking jump shot for a 7 footer.

It looks like Carver is going to play starter minutes this year. That is a huge concern, as he is basically a ghost when he is on the floor.

Kithcart has to play more minutes than he did last night. This might mean that we have to play BJ at the 4 (which would be our best lineup anyway).

BJ continues to struggle on defense.

Godwin is now looking for his shot, every time he touches the ball.

All in all, not bad, but if Aaron Carver is playing significant minutes for us, we will have another year of finishing 3rd or 4th in the conference and losing in the semis of the CUSA tournament.

I'm not overly concerned with Carver getting decent minutes as long as we get good offense production from the other 4 on the floor. We can live with one defensive and rebounding specialist on the floor but not multiple like we had a couple years back with Denzel and Baker.

I am not saying that Carver is not important. His defense is awesome, but his minutes need to be cut in half. I like the guy as a role player.

I couldn't have said it better myself. This is exactly my line of thinking. He may not be the best player, but he knows the system the best right now at that position. He's going to see significant minutes to start the year but that doesn't mean the others can't take over later in the year. Even better - he might be improved from last season anyway which provides even more depth for us. He looked very confident out there.

Believe it or not, pretty much everyone in the conference has this same issue, whether it's impact true freshman or transfers. We are far from alone in this.

RE: VWC@ODU
It was hard to get many takeaways from last nights game considering the competition and the terrible flow to the game, but I had a couple impressions:

Dickens looks like he is going to be really good in the future and maybe pretty darn good this year. He is very active, super long, and seems to move to the ball well.

Robinson does not look particularly good to me. He's not Anton Larsen bad, but he isn't light years better either. Slow, not much stamina, not terribly aggressive.

Wade looks like the kind of player you want on your team. He has some room to improve skills (as you would expect from a freshman in his first game), but his instincts and build look great. I loved to see him dive on the floor at the end of a blow out against VWU. That kind of hustle is contageous and Dickens was right there on the floor with him. It has been a while since we have see a guy really get after it like that.

Kithcart seems to be highly overrated by some on this board. He looks like a good backup point guard to me. Plays good defense, but not anything approaching a game changer.

Agree with 757 about Carver. I did not see enough offensive firepower to throw one position away on the offensive end.

I realize that it is part of the game, but I really don't like it.

I would like to think that a good ref, after NOT blowing the whistle on an Elmore flop, would take him aside and say: "Son, that was not a foul. It was not even close. But now that I've seen you do it, you need to realize that it is even less likely that I will be blowing my whistle next time I see you involved in a close play."

It was an exhibition, so I wasn't expecting edge-of-the-seat excitement. But last night's game was painful to watch. I don't ever before remember checking the clock as many times as I did and wondering why it wasn't moving.

I shouldn't say I like it, bc I dont...but, I like it if they are making an effort to draw fouls because its such a big part of the game now. Caver is more athletic than Elmore, but Elmore sells contact on drives to the basket.

Carver has done basically everything he's supposed to. He keeps his nose to the grindstone, works hard and is a team player. While I agree that if he getting significant minutes at the end of the year it probably isn't good, but until then someone had to unseat him. If the freshman want to start, they better work hard and take it for themselves.

RE: VWC@ODU
The take away I have from last night is that we could be a good zone defensive team with our length but I don't look for us to win many rebounding battles. Dickens can certainly be disruptive in different ways on defense with his length but I don't see anyone on that team rebounding in traffic the way way Brandon Stith could or Taylor before him. Robinson takes up space and I understand he is might have some rust to work off but he doesn't appear to be a game changer. At least for last night I thought we looked better with Dickens underneath. I like the look of Dickens foul shooting touch ( much better than any Big we have had in some time) and hopefully Robinson will beigin to look better as he gains experience and confidence with playing time.
I really liked Wade's play, particularly for his first game and Reece, Kithcart, Ezikpe look like they could help as well. Anyone know why Ezikpe was wearing a knee brace? He has great size for a freshman. He moves well and could become a real crowd favorite over time.
As for the offense, it just all seemed to be dribble and drive for BJ, Caver, and Green. Not crazy about that and hope to see more crisp passing to open up some good looks at the three for Godwin and BJ. But for a first game it was definitely fun watching our new players getting some minutes.

The loss of Stiths rebounding is certainly a concern. Porter was not as good of a rebounder. I think Dickens will be a fantastic rebounder. Robinson will get rebounds just because of his size. But, additionally..Carver is a pretty good rebounder for his size and BJ helps out downlow rebounding.

Certainly a concern, but I don't think it will be an issue this year.

I wonder if this in part accounts for the conference's poor OOC showing most years? It seems many coaches opt for the "let's win all we can this year" approach ( even if it means taking on one and dones) and not worry about building a program.

Over the years, UAB has done a nice job of getting freshman that are ready to be major contributors.

In talking with ex odu players at the game that still play today in the open gym with the current roster players - I was told that in 2 guard sets he is really good. In his limited minutes he had a condidence about him and great court awareness. I tend to listen to players who play the game when they single out certain players as a difference maker.

Brandon used to go after offensive rebounds like a mad dog going for a bone. Neither Dickens or Robinson seem to have that drive.(At least they didn't appear to last night)

You don’t easily replace a rebounder like Brandon stith.

He was a man amongst boys on the glass and knew how to use his body and jumping ability. I doubt either big man will approach his production on the glass, size is overrated, just look at how bad of rebounders Sam Harris and Larsen were and how good Ross and Stith were.

“Want to” is a huge part of it and stith always wanted it as much as anyone.

I didn’t make the game because I don’t enjoy watching the exhibition beat down. But I can’t wait for Tuesday in a meaningful game. I’m expecting this team to be special - and, most importantly, I like our chances of putting a beating on vcu. Lose every game, but beat vcu.
