NJIT
Our Dragons come home off a tough loss on the road to BGSU to start a 5 game home stretch. NJIT is 6-1 on the year with wins over mostly not good teams. Their loss was to an decent Cornell team. NJIT is scoring 73 points per game with their top 3 scorers all guards and the only ones averaging double digits points per game. They are giving up 64 a game, but that includes a non DI game in which they gave up 40 to Kean. An up-tempo style game should benefit us here.

The player to watch for NJIT is Zach Cooks, a 5'9" guard. He is scoring 17 points a game and is their second leading rebounding at just under 5 rebounds a game. Abdul Lewis is their leading rebounder at 5.3 per game, but only scores 7 a game. This is actually a game where we will have height advantages just about everywhere on the floor. Hopefully we can take advantage of that, especially on the offensive glass.

I have not seen a line on this game yet but ESPN's matchup predictor gives NJIT a 51% chance at victory. Realtime RPI has us projected as a 79-72 victor. Kenpom has us as 72-71 victors. I agree with all 3 that this should be a toss up, but leaning towards us.

http://www.vegasinsider.com/college-bask...as/?s=1026 has you favored by 1.5. The Sagarin expects you to win by 0.26 to 3.43 depending on what component you use.

Down 45-36 at half. And gave up a 3 to open the 2nd half. Team shoots 50% from the floor and trails by 9, that is very troubling. Gotta figure something out on defense. They shoot 60% again and this will easily be a 20-30 point loss

NJIT seems to be the itch we can’t scratch.

I like our uniforms. The stripe on the side looks good.

It was a nice comeback at the end, but they have to remember that all 40 minutes count equally, and those first 30 or so were a disaster. They handed out stat sheets at halftime, and for the first time, I saw an official +/- stat on the score sheet. In the first half, Drexel trailed by 9. Demir had a rating of +1. Meanwhile Troy Harper was at -15. That's all I'm going to say about tonight's game. The numbers speak for themselves.

I'd also like to add that it was great to see a good student turnout last night. Late in the game, I saw some of the old DAC Pack leaders waiving on the students to get on their feet late in the game and make noise, and they did.

I just don't understand why the DAC Pack is basically 8-12 guys and girls who are really into it, while 200-300 students are just sitting on their asses behind them looking at the their phone. I'd like to see the days again where being a student at a Drexel game basically meant being part of the DAC Pack. Wearing your gold shirt, and standing and screaming throughout was a requirement of attendance.

Students these days are just not old enough to remember those days, and I'm not sure the current DAC Pack has done enough to remind everyone of that. I've gone on record saying that they should hold weekly meetings and events to let people feel like part of the group, and not just people who stand in front of you at the games.

Once you lose that level of participation, you can't keep doing the same thing every year and expect numbers to return. It takes effort.

RE: NJIT
It is definitely a leadership thing.

However, on the game, while the comeback was nice, we really did nothing to deserve that game to be close. John caught fire briefly that got the game close, but that was followed by some really bad shots from him and others that we took. Our defense had some good stands late in the game, but NJIT hurt themselves more than we actually made stops on defense. It was a lay up line, but NJIT missed a lot of easy layups in the second half that allowed us to come back and make it a game.

Besides the relatively poor defense, the shot selection by us was just not good. Demir was trying to force things down low, even when doubled. Collectively we were taking off-balance, low quality jump shots out of nowhere. It was just bizarre because many of those shots did not need to be rushed. To me the team just needed to slow themselves down on offense. It felt like they were rushing when they were in the half court and our shooting naturally took a dive because of it. We also missed some easy shots right at the basket. Execution on offense in my eyes cost us this game.

The good was we absolutely crushed them on the boards. This was not unexpected against a guard driven team, however we didnt make them pay for it either. We had 16 offensive rebounds and we out-rebounded them as a whole by 17 (Plus 11 on offense and plus 6 on the defense). We gave ourselves 11 more shots than NJIT as a result. We couldn't capitalize. Onto the next game. These are winnable home games and it would be nice to pick up 2-3 wins out of the next 3 games to give more confidence as the OOC winds down.

RE: NJIT
Brought this up elsewhere last night; Troy played 23 minutes last night, but attempted more shots than everyone but Alihan (13 vs 14). He's 15th in the country in percentage of possessions used1 according to KenPom, is the only one of those 15 players to have an effective field goal percentage under 40, but takes 30% of the shots when he's on the court. He also is rocking a 13:22 assist to turnover ratio. I don't like picking on a kid, but he's a fifth year senior and needs to play better/smarter.

Quote:1. A measure of personal possessions used while the player is on the court. Simply assigns credit or blame to a player when his actions end a possession, either by making a shot, missing a shot that isn’t rebounded by the offense, or committing a turnover.

Agreed. But with Kurk out he has had to step up more minutes and court time. Kurk has had his own turnover issues, but Troy's have been very noticeable and it seems to fuel the rest of the guys into making bad decisions. When he is on the court he is definitely our leader, so the bad does come with the good.

RE: NJIT
I thought the same thing last night, but Kurk being out really hasn't changed anything. Troy was at 30% of possessions in the two games that Kurk played a normal amount of minutes in. Main beneficiary in Kurk's redistributed minutes has been Cam. Troy, Trey-vor and Zach have seen their minutes go up roughly the same amount. Troy, to me, is a very emotional player. He seems to think that he is The Guy, especially with Isabell gone, and the staff need to get him to look towards his teammates more. He can't be labeled on KenPom as our "Go-to-guy."

RE: NJIT
I get tired of past DAC Pack members criticizing current members/leadership. It seems to come up every year.

You know what will bring out a full and enthusiastic student section? Winning. End of story. You can’t expect kids to come out for a bad team on a campus that traditionally has zero school spirit. Some of them barely know what a winning record looks like.

What kind of support are they getting from the athletic department? I hope it’s decent.

That all being said...I feel like the concept of a student section has run its course. It’s going wrong at the high school level. Every game I go to...I get there early for a good seat only to be surrounded by standing students. It’s like they follow me. They’re great at looking the part with white outs or theme night...but they have no clue what to say. The dreaded “you can’t do that” chant is unfortunately all they can ever organize. I was telling Hazleton kids who surrounded me at a state playoff game they need to do “defense” every possession and they looked at me like I was crazy. It was only the state playoffs you know? Their pajama theme was on point though!

Eventually one loud mouth threatens to fight a kid in the opposite student section but clearly had no intention of fighting anybody unless it’s via Facebook or tweet. I try not to get into all this millennial criticism but I fear for our future a little more every time I go to a high school game. No cohesiveness. Spirit is fake. We can all learn from Japanese baseball fans.

RE: NJIT
No doubt Hiroshima. Winning fixes a lot. It is by no accident that our DAC Pack's best years coincided with the teams nearly best performances and best teams that came through Drexel. Level of play and level of competition are not doing use any favors either. It is also why I do not say much on the topic either. I do think leadership helps build it and sustain it. Winning speeds that up considerably. Without being on campus I am not privy to any efforts that are being done or not being done to grow the section. But it does appear that signs and rollouts have disappeared and bringing things like that back and showing their homework can go a long way into engaging other students.

Even if it isnt cohesive, cheering and shouting and making noise still give an atmosphere that the players desire and can rally off of. And showing students that can also encourage them to show up and be loud and cheer and have fun while helping the team win as well.

I wasn't criticizing; I was only making observations of what I witnessed through the downturn and conjecturing about ways to potentially get interest back up. If that comes across as criticism, then perhaps that says more about the state of the current Pack than it does me or other alumni.

It's a good point regarding the lack of school spirit overall, that's definitely a factor. The extent of the peak Pack is honestly pretty impressive considering the general school environment. I would like to see more City 6 games which I think could boost interest a bit, but I know there are a lot of other factors there.
