Yeah... he's starting to look like the 6th man!

I am so thrilled for Gary. He's a great guy and deserves this as much as anybody. Different kind of player, but I see (at worst) a Jason Maxiell type of long, productive NBA career for Gary. I believe he could even put up Draymond Green type numbers after a couple years in Mike D'Antoni's system.

Felt nostalgic reading that Rockets forum and seeing them "discover" Gary for the first time. Sort of how I felt his freshman year.

So excited to learn of his early success and I hope he has a long (highly compensated) NBA career.

I won't ever suggest anyone is irreplaceable, but his are big shoes to fill for this Bearcat team. I won't suddenly expect to see any of this year's front court players perform at his level; he was very special.

Draymond with a better outside shot has always been my dream Comp for Gary.

77K is the base salary...he gets a proportionate salary based on number of games played in the NBA. Minimum Guaranteed salary in 18-19 is $936,932 or $582,180 if it is a partial non-fully guaranteed contract for a NBA player in their 1st season. Using low numbers and he is on a NBA roster for the maximum 45 days and plays in a third of the 82 games...you are adding 192K to his base 77K....his most likely floor for this season is a 269K salary. If the Rockets call him up for the whole season he will make between 582K-936K unless they sign him to a longer contract. Not a bad 1st year in the NBA, much nicer route than Sean Kilpatrick had.

Is it correct that he has to play 45 games in gleague? I guess if that it correct they could tear that contract up and give him a regular contract. Weird dymanic, don't see that very often.

That is not my understanding. Under his current contract, I believe he is only allowed a max of 45 days on the NBA roster, during a time when the G-League has not started, or is already finished playing. Essentially, the beginning and the end of the NBA calendar does not count towards the 45 days.

In other words, I think the 45-day clock started 4 days ago on 11/2.

Of course, someone who knows better feel free to correct.

If he keeps showing what he is showing, I have no doubt that things will work out well for him.

Not sure the exact number, but with Houston having guys who were injured early in the season, Clark has gotten more play and taken advantage of the opportunity. In the Houston Cronicle article linked below, D'Antoni mentions Clark is headed to Rio Grande Valley soon.

Quote:CHICAGO — As Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni made his way through the United Center visitors’ locker room after Saturday’s win, as he often does, he saw a crowd of media surrounding rookie forward Gary Clark and had to comment.

“He’s going to be in Rio Grande Valley in a week,” D’Antoni quipped before moving on to Clint Capela’s hair as groans filled that corner of the room.

With that, D’Antoni had offered a sure sign Clark, though playing with a two-way contract with the Rockets and the G League Vipers, had impressed his coach enough that he need not worry.

Though the Rockets had no intention on relying on rookies in their rotation, particularly in the first weeks of the season, Clark and Isaiah Hartenstein have not only gotten regular minutes, they have brought energy and poise that has offered more than just bodies to fill in while the team deals with injuries.

Clark, 23, is an undrafted rookie who does not have a standard NBA contract. Hartenstein, 20, a center, is a 2017 second-round pick who signed a G League contract last season.

“Pretty good,” D’Antoni said of the play of his rookies. “Gary’s playing really well. Like old-time, like a vet. He doesn’t make many mistakes. He can really shoot the basketball. Isaiah gives a lot of energy. He can play about five minutes before he runs out of gas. They’ve got to improve a lot. It’s going to take all year. But we’re going to count on those guys. We have to.”

...

They bring energy,” veteran guard Chris Paul said. “We talked about it. This is probably the best batch of rookies I’ve seen in a while on a team that I was on. They do their work. They work hard, and they listen. Gary shoots it. He just knows how to play. Gary is 23, so he’s been around the game for a while.

It is entirely possible Houston decides to convert his contract from a Two-Way Deal to a standard contract. This happened to a player in Detroit last year. It allowed the Pistons to be bring up other guys on a Two-Way Deal.

Amazing how Gary went from basically no threat from 3 pt range, to making an occasional 3 ptr his junior year, to being a guy who can knock down an open 3 his senior year, to being a guy that Chris Paul wants to throw it to when he is open for 3 on an NBA team.

Just remarkable.

Yeah, watched the game last night, and Gary was a regular part of their rotation. I think he even matched James Ennis' minutes, the guy who he's backing up.

It's funny though, on offense he rarely touches the ball. Not because he's bad, but because the Rockets run a worse offense than UC, albeit with James Harden, Chris Paul, Melo, Capela, Gordon, etc. If I was a fan I'd be ripping my hair out, they might as well just play Harden and Paul and let the rest of the guys stay back on D.

This is actually a problem for college coaches as well. I've heard some coach bring it up (maybe Calipari). Basically, the college guys watch the NBA and want to emulate their playing style. But the NBA consist of a lot of 1v1 or 2v2 on offense. Get a certain matchup and then everyone else get out of the way. The majority of NBA teams play this way (and it is part of why I don't generally enjoy watching NBA games).

It does not work nearly as well at the college level (with perhaps a few exceptions). The 3-point line being closer and most teams not having 5 major three point shooting threats, makes it easier for defenses to help and double the driver.
