RE: Gary Clark | Rockets
It seems things have changed in Houston. Clark has an ongoing DNP streak. Curiously it seems to have started right around the time he got his contact. Perhaps he's hurt?

He wasn't particularly efficient, so maybe they're going in a different direction for now? Interesting how the tide changed so swiftly.

Yeah, they gave him some run, and he wasn't able to get it done offensively. If you're going to be a 3&D forward you gotta hit those 3s. He does have the defense thing down, but opposing teams can basically ignore him on the other end of the court, and that makes it 4 on 5 basically and harder on Harden.

0-5 from the field (all 3 point attempts) but did have 8 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks with a +3 plus/minus in 24 min of action. In related news, Houston had 70 3 point attempts on 105 field goal attempts...that's some video game sh!t. 04-jawdrop

Any info on why he got the start? Injuries? Playing better at practice? Or just trying to give him a shot to see if he is in their long-term plans?

I know that at least Paul and Capela are out, not sure of any others.

Capela is out and old man NeNe Hilario started last game at center and flopped. they don't have many bigs right now that don't just camp out on the 3 point line and can actually bang in the post if needed and rebound.

Disappointed for Clark with last night's results. Any idea what percentage he is hitting from the 3 point line? Seems that was a later addition to his game at UC and he showed a nice stroke last year that probably won some games for us. Here's hoping he gets his shot back for the Rockets.

Season: 29.3%
Last night: 0 for 5
Prior 8 games: 7 for 11

Go figure.

I think he'll settle in as a 33-37% three point shooter in the league. With everything else he gives a team that will make him a nice rotational player.

Playing for Houston is tough as your role is essentially to sit on the three point line and watch Harden play iso ball and be ready when he kicks it out. His usage rate is off the charts historically.

I understand Houston's philosophy. While it might analytically be the way to play the game, I can watch only a few minutes of it. I wonder how much longer until fans get "tired" of the barrage of three pointers the NBA has become.

Oh I don't know, it seems pretty easy to me. Only have to run on one end of the floor.

I'd argue that analytically it may be the best way to win regular season games now but the usage has a negative long term affect on Harden and he's got a poor playoff track record.

I've been questioning lately how "valuable" Harden is to his team. They are 6-5 during this recent stretch of high scoring games by Harden. His coach comes out after beating the lowly Knicks by just four points commenting something to the effect "it's hard for James' teammates to play with him sometimes."

But here's the kicker, Harden's last 261 points have been UNASSISTED! Throw in all his misses, and that's a lot of standing around by his teammates. I think ESPN said the previous record for unassisted points was 53 by Iverson.

p.s. bearcatmark the philodox (learned that last night from my son's vocabulary words): please save me from your empirical evidence countering every claim in this post. I do not care if I didn't quote D'antoni correctly.

RE: Gary Clark | Rockets
I actually really like Harden as an offensive player. The way they're using him now may be working in the short term but over the course of 82 plus playoffs I think it's not sustainable. He has a history of not having a lot left for the playoffs and he's being used substantially more this year. The Rockets biggest issue is giving a $40 million dollar 4 year deal to an aging superstar with an injury history. Harden is probably going to have to do this for years as the Rockets are handcuffed by the albatross of the Paul contract. His prime years offensive stats are probably going to be on a level not seen since Wilt.

It's a tough balance, because he has struggled at times in the playoffs (of course they were a Chris Paul injury or a reasonable 3 point shooting night away from probably winning the NBA finals last season), but at the same time this Houston team as constructed wasn't making the playoffs without Harden doing his superman act. They started 1-5 then were 4-7. They used Harden a ton even then, but since have basically just made him their everything. They've run off 3 different 5+ game winning streaks in that time and are back up to 27-20, in first place in their division.

I really hope he has a strong playoffs, because I don't want a couple down series in the playoffs to be the thing everyone remembers about him. What he's doing now is extraordinary.
