I actually think she's just implementing approaches that have worked well at larger institutions. I'm interested to see if the IMG/Learfield angle will lead to outsourced ticket sales and management. Several schools are going that way.

It's mutually beneficial - W&M increases sponsorship revenues through payment from VWSE, eliminates a position with salary and benefits, and VWSE leverages the W&M brand and their existing partnerships to make money.
The common feeling on this board is that the MBB team will finally break through this year or next. If that happens, then VWSE sure jumped in at the right time and this contract will be a steal for them. "Leveraging the brand" of that national feel-good story -- will they be able to handle so much good fortune?

They DID NOT pay the Van Wagner group anything AND this is a university-wide contract. Athletics is only part of it. But, sure, that ‘lavish’ expense for the griffin is fair game I guess. Smh
Man, I agree. Sometimes I think some people just have short (very short) memories.
Maybe I have been around for a long time, as I got to know all the AD's back to Les Hooker (okay, so I got to know him because he was my first Baseball coach - that shows how far we've come, the AD no longer needs to coach a sports team as well...), but the common link between all the AD's, Carnevale, Randolph, Copeland, Driscoll, etc., was the common refrain to the statement "I have this idea...", was always "We don't have money for that."
So, I am so happy that we have an AD that is actually "doing stuff", that I don't care if she stumbled across TJ's secret Steam Tunnel stash of gold coins, found a Sugar Daddy with pockets as large as Mr. Zable's, or just decided "we are going to do this and I'll worry about finding the cash later.", at least it is getting done. Attempts are being made.
In the future, we might find out that one or two things didn't work that well, but we might also find out that one or two worked miracles. Either way, at least it's action, which is more than was the case in all too many situations in the past.
Remember W&M true motto: Doing things the way we always have - since 1694.
So, I say, respectfully, "You go girl!". I'm all for it!
I'm right there with you, Billymac, when it comes to frustration at previous regimes' inactivity and failure to get things done. However, the point at which we differ is that I guess that I am more of a "brick and mortar" type guy who wants to see the money spent on something tangible and not just on another report or study. Maybe this contract will be a boon, but maybe not. One thing is for sure: Huge is not afraid to use her connections to spend money.
(By the way, before someone else says it, let me point out that a Griffin statue is metal, not brick or mortar (although this must mean that I LOVE the pedestal that the Griffin sits on)).

I would imagine this decision will be very much impacted by what the arena decision looks like. If they pursue a new arena that can be used for concerts, family shows, etc. They'll almost certainly go with a 3rd party to manage the venue and ticketing. (Example...ODU uses Spectra Venue Management for Constant Center management, SB Ballard game day ops, ticketing, and booking).
