Question RE: Hot Stove 2018/19

What do the Reds have to offer for that pitching? What would they give Braves for Teheran, for instance?

Question RE: Hot Stove 2018/19
And while we're talking...anyone have a decent catcher for the Braves for a few years?

Probably, not to mention just their really bad record the last few years. They've got a decent farm system though, and might be able to get some talent that way. The FA market for pitchers isn't amazing at all, and it looks like Kershaw and the Dodgers are trying to keep him off the table too.

Braves got pitching to offer for the right price. What'll ya have, what'll ya have?

They signed Ty Flowers for 2 more years...not sure why--I wouldn't have (but hes' a local boy). I like Suzuki, but he's old. Neither a long term solution. Braves need Catching. Not sure if they'd make a play for Grandal...what did you think of his playoff performance?

ETA; Reds got any catching to offer, Blazer?

I don’t know if you did that on purpose, but the only thing I can think of when I read that last sentence is this Tommy Lasorda nsfw classic...

Okay, Brookes. I used to hate LaSorda when he managed the Dodgers...because they were always good..we were in the NL West together all those years remember.

Only time I was really excited for the Dodgers was 1988, which was a tremendous World Series for them. SI had an excellent article during the season by Hershiser that broke down an entire complete game pitch by pitch. I wish I could find it online--I lost my original issue I had saved. It was during his hitless streak. It was a fascinating article.

Tell you what, ya'll sign Markakis for 3 years for $11 mil per and maybe we'll think about Grandal? (I kid, I kid.) Actually considering where we are with catching, Grandal would probably be an improvement. But we'd still need to keep Suzuki and give you Flowers back in the deal.

Nats’ signing of Rosenthal sets a pretty high benchmark for relievers. $7MM guaranteed for 2019, potential bonuses of another $8MM, and maybe $15MM in 2020 if he hits targets in 2019. For a guy who is just back from TJ surgery! On the other hand, his velo is apparently great and he could be a huge asset for a troubled bullpen.

Yeah - I left him out but it's a no-brainer to pick up his option.

Well, they declined the $6MM option but agreed on a $5MM one year deal. Good news.

saw this from Joel Sherman:
Hear #Dodgers are definitely extending a qualifying offer to Yasmani Grandal. Still debating on Hyun-jin Ryu as deadline nears.

wonder if Ryu is contingent on what happens with Kershaw.....

4 hours to go for Kershaw.

Saw Heyman on twitter say that he thinks Grandal should take the QO. Some ways that would make a lot of sense for him. He's not getting 18 million for a year anywhere else. Might be able to get something like 3/30- but doing it like this would be him betting on himself quite frankly....

They extended him the QO. The Dodgers aren't thrilled with Grandal. His offensive stats aren't bad, but when you look closely you see he's very streaky and kind of disappeared for a couple of months, not to mention his post season struggles. And the defense... as I've mentioned before it seems he focuses so much on framing that he gets an excessive number of PBs. The problem is they don't have a significantly better option. Barnes is better defensively but his offense this year was non existent. I'm not sure why but the Dodgers don't seem to like Farmer much as a catcher. And the two kids on the farm, as good as they are, aren't ready for prime time. So... he accepts the QO and they'll live with him for another year. Or he doesn't - they get a supplemental pick and maybe go shopping?

I've seen Realmuto mentioned a couple of places. Two years of team control. He'll cost prospects, but the Dodgers could swing that (maybe include one of the two catchers). Cervelli is another possibility. He's a FA after 2019.

swoosh, what do you think of Giants' interest in Farhan Zaidi for President of Baseball Operations? Great guy, but if he goes to SFO? Dead to me! After all the advanced metrics criticism from LA's playoff run, I wonder if this would give Giants fans pause. On the other hand, you gotta do something to turn things around, right...?

the thing that's funny for me with advanced metrics- I'm fine with them. But there has to be a human element to it as well. Hinch and Cora last 2 years have shown that to the nth degree- they've been able to change on the fly if you will. Roberts hasn't. At some point- feel has to be a part of things.

Agree. Managing for 162 regular season games "by the numbers" makes sense - it's a ton of data and playing the analytics is likely to give you the best outcome over the long haul. But those numbers ultimately are just giving you odds. Very informed odds but still ending up with a manager placing a bet. And the fewer repetitions you get, the more unreliable those odds will be. This is why playoff management needs to take much more into account how a particular player is performing at that moment. I think that's where/how the Dodgers failed. (And I won't say Roberts because I'm not at all certain these were 100% his decisions. The fact that he's about to receive a new contract is a good indicator he's been doing what the FO has asked.)

This is all well and good, but the Red Sox won because the Red Sox have the better team. I don't have a problem with most of Roberts's moves. Jansen blew two games, Madson blew another and the Dodgers hitters struggled with scoring with RISP due to their lack of contact skills. Say what you want, but the Dodgers didn't lose because Roberts was inflexible. They lost because the Sox are better. End of story.
