ETSU Vs. Mercer 1 loss vs. 2 loss Elimination game.
Furman vs. Chattanooga 2 loss vs. 2 loss Potential elimination game for Chattanooga. Furman has to win the conference to get in the playoffs with four losses already.
Wofford vs. Samford 1 loss vs. 2 loss - Samford is sitting at four losses as well, elimination game for them as well with a high powered offense playing at home.

The scenario for absolute chaos going into the final stretch.
ETSU Wins
Chattanooga Wins
Wofford Loses

Absolute chaos
ETSU L words
Wofford loses
Chattanooga wins.

That puts us with six teams with two conference losses and two weeks left in the season.
ETSU needs to win next weekend. Bucs need Samford to do us a solid.

At the end of the day, it seems that if we win one of the next two, we should be in the playoffs- correct?

Just by looking at the standings, if we beat Mercer and Woffy beats Samford, I think the bucs are in.

However if the Bucs beat Mercer and Samford beats Wofford, the Bucs can go for all the marbles against Samford for the conference championship. But if we lose, you have a real problem because at least three teams would be 6-2, And I don’t know if the socon gets three in this year. And the Bucs lost to two of the other teams.

I think that winning one of the next two would put us in an interesting spot. The SoCon is not viewed quite the same this year (in terms of overall strength), meaning that there would not be an assurance of anything beyond the auto-bid (which would likely be Wofford if we lose one).

As of now, the field would look something like this:

Auto Bids: (1) UC Davis—Big Sky; (2) Kennesaw State—Big South; (3) Towson—Colonial; (4) North Dakota State—Missouri Valley; (5) Sacred Hearth—Northeast; (6) Murray State—Ohio Valley; (7) Colgate—Patriot League; (8) San Diego—Pioneer League; (9) Wofford—Southern; (10) Central Arkansas—Southland

Virtual Locks (assuming nothing crazy happens): (1) James Madison; (2) Eastern Washington; (3) Weber State; (4) South Dakota State; (5) Illinois State; (6) Stony Brook

That leaves eight spots. I think that we would have a great case for one of them, but so would quite a few other teams. That list (in my opinion) includes: (1) East Tennessee State; (2) Chattanooga; (3) Delaware; (4) Maine; (5) Rhode Island; (6) North Dakota; (7) Northern Iowa; (8) Western Illinois; (9) Jacksonville State; (10) Southeast Missouri State; (11) McNeese State; (12) Sam Houston State; (13) Incarnate Word; (14) Nicholls State (15) Idaho State; (16) Montana; (17) Montana State; (18) Elon; (19) Jacksonville State

Several play in conferences that are viewed favorably this year (like the Colonial) or have signature wins (Illinois State over Colorado State; Elon over JMU). So while I think we all believe that ETSU should be in if they finish with only three losses, I don't know that anything is guaranteed.

They way things are going, we don’t have much room for error. To quote Lou Brown “win the whole (blank) thing”

There have been 7 win teams that have made the playoffs, though this is normally a case of such a team winning their conference but blowing most if not all of their out of conference games. 8 win teams can and go miss the playoffs quite a bit, so that isn't a guarantee either. Even then, an 8-3 record would more then likely see any playoff games being road games. Considering overall program history though, that would still be quite an achievement.

Not to be picky, but that was legendary catcher Jake Taylor who said that, in response to Roger Dorn asking "what's that?". 04-cheers
Starts this week, get the win over Mercer and get to 8 wins. Wouldn't be hurt at all to see Chattanooga and Samford go ahead and lose and be eliminated. Furman's on the outside looking in so they could be spoiler.

RE: Next Week
Well it’s official. Before the season kicked off, I predicted the Bucs would win 6 games this year. People had a hard time seeing that. I had them winning 5 games through the first 9 contests and 1 more in the last 3. The win against WCU was an added victory I didn’t see; hence they have bested any expectations anyone, including myself had. Kudos to the staff, but more importantly, to each and every member of the team from the starters down to the practice scout squad. Without the contributions of each and every one of them – this season does not shape up like it has. Therefore, I want to wish the entire team the best throughout these up coming weeks.

I don’t think many fans thought they would be playing a truly meaningful ballgame in November. They Are. People will no doubt criticize them for the lack of Offense (and Defense) displayed throughout various segments of the game, but you have to admit that when the game is on the line, both sides step. Whether it’s a needed stop on 3rd or 4th down, a turnover or a sack, the D steps up. Whether it’s a last minute O drive with no time outs, side line catches, QB/RB dives, and O-line poise – they’ve done it, and now the confidence is there.

Now take heed, going forward, the FCS in total will no longer count them out. Opponents will prepare and play much harder when you have a reputation. But isn’t that a good thing? Cheers 2018 Bucs – you all deserve it! 04-cheers

RE: Next Week
The FCS Playoff Committee released their first Top 10 ranking yesterday. Most of the choices were to be expected, but I found it interesting that both Elon (#5) and Delaware (#10) made the list. I had viewed those teams as among those we would be competing with for the final group of spots. There is still a lot of football to be played, but this speaks to the uncertainty of an 8-3 ETSU team getting a shot.

RE: Next Week
We played a pretty weak non-FBS non-conference schedule (as we should). Our best win is Chattanooga at home. The SoCon as a whole is way down this year. (That's probably one of the reasons we have done so well.) I do not think we are a lock at all at 8-3. I'm hopeful we are in at 8-3 but 9-2 has a much nicer look.
