Unlike some teams (Florida State), I don't see any signs this team is not giving a solid effort and has given up. I think the young guys are for the most part doing a nice job and I think the team is going to win a game (some games) if they have a quarterback (Wiley Green being the latest guy who has looked alright if he can stay in there).
They have to cut down on the penalties and bad plays. But UTEP is one of two remaining games that are winnable (and Louisiana Tech isn't a sure thing either).

How many 15-yard penalties did we have today?

RE: Post UNT//Pre-UTEP thread
I saw the second half. Other that about 10 minutes of the 4th Q, it was a close and pretty well played game... compared to the rest of the season, so far.
Good things: Green, Octoviano (where did he come from??), Cephus, Trammel, Fox and the Owl pass rush. Good to see the coaches making some adjustments and shifting away from all run all the time.
Not so good things: Too many dumb penalties, questionable clock management.
We might win another game this year. One.
However, I’ve got more hope for the future than I did a couple of games ago.

Season so far:
One last second victory against a .500 FCS team
Three moral victories where we had a pulse/some encouragement about future (1 3Q against Houston, 2H Hawaii, 1st 3 quarters today). Team exceeded expectations before the game.
Five embarrassments (So. Miss, Wake, UAB, FIU, and UTSA). Team disappointed against expectations before the game.
Owls in moral victory column again. Sad that Parliament is feeling better about a 24 point loss against a C-USA team but that is where program is at right now. Years away from that being a 24 point win but team fought today. Give credit for that.

.the refs should be flogged. All of them. And then CUSA summarily disbanded.
This was a uniquely pathetic embarrassment that was unbecoming of humanity. And the children that subsequent said humanity.

Not that I had any expectations for the UNT game, but it does show how far the collapse has been, given that in 2008, UNT was flogged like 77-15 and I don't think it was that close.

N Texas State post- game presser with Coach Bloom. Not the greatest video, but I guess that’s all that has been made available.

I was there. I remember Rice running up the middle on a 3rd and 29 to avoid running up the score.
Now they run up the middle on 3rd and 9 down 21 in the 4th.

The difference is that we spent the intervening decade going backward, and they spent the intervening decade going forward, albeit in bits and starts. They refused to accept mediocrity. They fired Todd Dodge after 2010, they fired Dan McCarney after the Portland State debacle, and they are now in the third year under Seth Littrell. Let's see how where we are in three years compares with where UNT is in its third year under Littrell. That seems to me to be the appropriate measuring point.
Of Rice coaches who have lasted three years, since Jess, I would have fired Bo Hagan after three years, probably kept Al Conover and Ray Alborn, kept Fred and Ken, and fired Bailiff after 2009. And if not after 2009, certainly after 2010 or 2011.

Ray Alborn had a nice season in 1980 (out of town in college, I almost lost it when I heard we beat LSU, then later clobbered CH 35-7). 1981 looked ok, but 1982 and 1983 were awful. If I remember, there were significant player conflict issues in 1982 and the team mojo was a mess. In some ways, those seasons were not unlike the two seasons after 2008.

Very similar in lots of ways. Ray is the one that I would have kept after 3 seasons, but not in hindsight reflecting on the entire tenure.
One big difference. A big part of the 1982-83 problem, IMO, was that was about the time that academic requirements for athletes hit their minimum, and we brought in a lot of people who didn't belong, and who didn't last long enough to be juniors or seniors. With them came a lot of the internal conflict issues. Basically, we were trying to play football with a number of people who really didn't belong at Rice University, and the results were pretty much what should be expected from that kind of disconnect.

Well, this week there is no such thing as a moral victory - it either a win or a loss, real world style.
Makes me wonder what a "moral victory" against the worst team in FBS (at least coming into the game) would look like.
Agree. This week it's either win or earn the top spot at the bottom of FBS.

Tis weekend, we could actually have a real victory that was not also a moral victory.

Vegas doesn't think UTEP is the worst team in FBS. Opening line is UTEP favored by 1.
