I'm not all that excited by garbage time scoring either, but when you have mostly freshmen out there on the field, it seems to me that they could gain some valuable game experience in a two minute offense in this situation. Even down by three scores with zero chance to win, why not get the "practice" in a real game?

No practice situation can perfectly simulate an actual game. This was a chance to grow our younger players and we just threw it away IMO.

Yes. Plus good for team/fan morale. Makes game look a little closer. That actually does matter.

Edit;. One reason I guess to give up trying was small chance of a pick 6 that would make us lose our spread cover.

Well, me, obviously. I had Rice by 4 and we were pretty much on pace for my 34-30 prediction early in 3Q.

Just gotta maintain, boys. We’ll get there.

Oh and did I mention the refs?!

Grr

That is enjoyable football, score didn’t reflect the effort. We know the future is in the young Quarterbacks!

Only saw part of the middle of the game, but liked what I saw.
Scrappy D, and great first outing from Green!

A loss is still a loss. We may have found a quarterback but he needs to get rid of the ball faster. The refs were terrible but typical of Conf USA refs. The defense really played well and lot of nice defensive schemes. I am not sure what was going on at the end. We could have easily scored again with a two minute offense but probably we did not have a two minute offense with anew quarterback.

The defense gave up 41 points - 24 in the last 15:04 minutes. Maybe we have different definitions of playing really well with nice defensive schemes?

Owl defense is going to have to play a lot better for this team to compete and win, even in the current CUSA.

I think the defense has been a lot better this year than the last couple. We create more negative plays, seemingly are in the right spot more, etc. Issues seem to be more surrounding depth and stamina.

OTOH, they gave up 17in 44:56.. I think the back breaker was the PF penalty when we had them stopped and punting. Made the defense play another 10 or so play, gave up point, and the offense started going three and out after that.

They were some questionable calls that hurt the defense, such as the out of bounds unnecessary roughness call and the roughing the passer call.

IIRC, the offense gave UNT very short field positions multiple times towards the end of the game.

You’re right in my opinion, OO. I was there, right next to the bench, when this bullsh*t call came in. It was as if the air had been let out of a tire. Recall that it was right at this time that we pretty much abandoned the blitz. After six PFs, they were gonna call something, and keep calling it.

The Adrenalin drained, and what was left was fatigue. I talked to a buddy after the game who’s a Rice football letterman and a parent of a recent Rice football lettermen, and it said that he thought, in the fourth quarter, once we more or less had our smash mouth style of play taken away from us, it was like seeing “a bunch of big-*ssed grown men beating up on just a bunch of young boys.”

May not be the same, but I recall as a much younger man playing industrial league basketball, when the refs wouldn’t let us box out the bigger men underneath the basket. Totally determined the outcome of the games.

Who made that call, to abandon the game plan? The players or the staff?

Also, wasn't this the first game after one in which we had zero penalties?

OK. So while the Owls were playing their "smash mouth style of play", the Owls were being penalized frequently, but holding their own on the scoreboard. When the Owls abandoned that style to avoid the penalties, UNT scores 21 unanswered in the 4Q. That's some unconventional wisdom.

Look, it's all just excuses until the Owls can overcome both the opponent and the lousy CUSA refs. That's what good teams do. The Owls aren't a good team yet, but the play, at times, of the freshman, on both sides of the ball, gives some hope that progress is being made.

Ok they are not a good team, but that bad team played even with a good team until we abandoned our game plan.

If plan A is working, even with penalties, why abandon it?

It seems like they need to overcome the opponent, the bad refs, AND their coaching staff.

The goal is to win the game, not to avoid penalties.
