Realignment coming again, this time fundamental
https://www.cbssports.com/college-footba...alignment/
According to this article the issue of player compensation is going to nuke the existing P5 conferences. I believe that will be the case. Sean Frazier's G5 playoff idea probably won't look so crazy in that scenario, especially if some current P5 teams decide not to follow the high compensation group and join the current G5 group.

RE: Realignment coming again, this time fundamental
It's going to happen and the sticking point in this will be pay equality. Will schools pay male and female athletes the same? Will they pay a bench player the same as the star?
Lots to unpack.
I still remain firmly convinced that "player compensation" is the huge value of a college scholarship and the leg-up and privilege it provides a student athlete both at the school, and in those important career formative years after college.
In my perfect world, the dollars associated with player compensation would be used to fund full-ride athletic scholarships for all student-athletes at each university. Paying kids cash money just doesn't sit well with me, outside of maybe some small subsidies for living expenses not covered in scholarship.

Sure...when the value is realized from the college scholarship. If I walked into my job tomorrow, and they said look...we've got a BIG new compensation package for you, just wait 5 - 10 years to see it pay-off...I may not love that. :)
Yes, I know it's more complicated than that and we can debate for weeks, just saying what you think is a 'huge value' is not how some would see it.

They aren't paying for college. That is an immediate benefit.

+1
My thoughts exactly.
If a full-ride scholarship with the benefits that brings isn't enough for you (and your family) than DON"T be a Student-Athlete. Just be a Student.
Compensation is a slippery slope that I can't even imagine where it will end up in 5-10 years.
Greed. Not by the kids, but by the Commissioners, AD's, Media etc...

How many of these kids don't care about getting an education and it's NFL or bust for them? I would think the number is fairly high.

I think that it's very important to separate out the regular SA from those SA's who are getting screwed through the usage of their likeness, images, and skills bring national success. And there really are not that many of those SAs. I'd say less than 200 in a year and many of those 200 are repeats from years prior. So say 100 new truly impactful SAs that are bringing national recognition and money to their university at a level where an argument should be made that some of that money should go to the SA.
As someone who has directly benefited from being a scholarship athlete, I do believe that everyone outside a small percentage of 1%er athletes understand the importance of scholarship and the benefits the school provides (tutors, health care etc) as part of the SA experience. That is where the concentration should be, not $20 bills for dollar beer night at Amnesia.
Paying all SAs is going to screw NIU. Hard.
Investing more dollars in scholarships and opportunities for athletes will help NIU. Greatly.

I strongly challenge that, even for football players. And our APR and graduation rates support that NIU student athletes understand that it's not NFL (or WNBA or world Track League or the US National team) or bust.

Oh I agree with you the number is very small that bring in the big $, but for those, would be fair for them to get it. And I certainly understand the complexity of getting them their due is difficult.
And I agree for the majority of student athletes, tuition/boarding covered is probably 'fair enough'. But that doesn't make it less wrong that the 'small group' that does bring in big $ doesn't get more.
My opinion is in no way related to NIU success, I get that's a separate discussion. I just disagree with the statement that a scholarship should be 'GREAT VALUE' in all cases, doesn't match up with reality.
