Help with school assignment
For my rhetoric class Ineed to do a speech criticism. My professor is a big Eastern history buff. I would like to do my criticism on when the University changed their name from Hurors to Eagles. I have not been able to find a video or transcript or really any decent articles with quotes from this change. I do not aim to dig up old differences or anything but any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Have you been to the Eastern Echo to view the archives from that time? They have every article they’ve ever published stored in hard bound books.
Also, the university librarians should be able to assist with sifting through the library’s archives.

There is a history building on Huron st it's hard to see. That has a great deal of information also there is a man called uncannily James Mann that knows most of the history of Ypsilanti and ann arbor he loves to talk Ypsilanti ann arbor. Try him. He can't drive he has a book out actually several try the library or the bomber

RE: Help with school assignment
Wikipedia, IF used properly, can be a good place to start. It can briefly give you a synopsis of what happened and give you the frame (e.g., dates, people (tribes), etc. etc.) from which to 'build out' your topic. It can also give some good references (links) to start from.
E.g., if you are going to go through Eastern Echo archives you would obviously need key dates so you aren't 'looking for a needle in the haystack."
Kind of like WHAT happened, WHEN it happened and then try to ascertain WHY it happened and the issues regarding it.

Dear vannzee,
The name change came when Shelton was president. I think 1994, but i can't say for sure.

It was a stupid thing to do.
The Hurons got their name from a Hotel, not a Native American tribe.
True story.

RE: Help with school assignment
There is a website for the Huron Restoration Chapter that includes a lot of information.
Why it happened is simple. William Shelton, the president at the time had huge political ambitions beyond EMU and he envisioned removing the Huron nickname as his ticket to bigger and better things as he believed it would position himself as a renowned defender of Native Americans.
Instead of simply revising the mascot, Shelton bungled the whole process and left town shortly thereafter. Thus a University with the "Huron" river running next to campus relinquished its Huron nickname while Central Michigan remained the Chippewas with a simple logo change.
At least justice prevailed somewhat when good ole Bill truly reached the pinnacle of his career as the president at East Carolina University instead of the Major university or governorship that he truly craved. He was indeed the "Jimmy Carter" of EMU presidents sans the impressive after-presidency that Carter has had. Worst president EVER!

I beg your pardon, he has risen to very lofty ranks...president of American University. If that ain’t the American success story then nothing is. And, just think, he left an indelible legacy that we all have to live with.
I walked into a restaurant this afternoon with one of my “E” hats on. A fellow behind the counter asked, “What can I get for the Eagle.” I looked around and said, “You must be talking to someone else because I am not an eagle.” I never say anything about the Huron/Eagle issue...unless someone makes a dumb remark. I won’t make a stink here either except to say that everyone knows it was all much ado about nothing. People claiming to speak for native people when the real native people had no problem with EMU remaining tje Hurons, sans the native person sillouette on the sport paraphernalia.

RE: Help with school assignment
The interesting stuff you won't get from the papers. I think the worst was how terrible the U treated some of it's more faithful alumni. Kicked aside by transient administrators because they didn't agree. I had a coach tell me he salvaged athletic trophies from the garbage, tossed away because they had the Huron name on them.
There are some parallels with the debacle we're seeing now with cutting sports. Inept, transient administrators acting with disregard for alums. Deliberate and willful misrepresentation by the administration. Attempts to silence critics. Pathetic.
Some of the people I knew Said that the homecoming parade was terminated because people used it to voice their opinion about the Huron name.

Dr. Ronald Flowers (current emu professor) has some pretty great historical sports and history documentation of EMU. He has a few books at the library I think.
