It doesn't seem like a complete coincidence that the outspoken players during the coaching change were all Huggins era Bearcats.

only 1 of those teams was on his final 8 lol

So, I'm guessing a commitment to Oregon.

The whole NVE twitter outrage by some former guys has solidified to me that it was best for the university and the athletic department to move away from the Bob Huggins/Mick Cronin coaching tree for this hire.

It is imperative that our student-athlete alums continue to support their school throughout their lifetime, regardless of who the coach is. As Jerry pointed out on the last page, he doesn't see this at WVU. Frankly, I don't see it anywhere else.

This is coming from a guy who was a student during the Huggins Final Four and early Elite Eight teams. I've always been a fan, but I have to say I am disappointed of the way some of these guys who went on to make a lot of money have failed to give back to their alma mater.

Bobby Knight, Woody Hayes, and Joe Paterno also had cult followings. So it happens at other schools. Sometimes you need to be a few coaches removed to get over it.

And those coaches are headed for the fall when they start to believe that they are bigger than the athletic director, president, board of trustees, billionaire donors, and entire legal system.

Given the amount of time teams spend together I'd be surprised if the bond with those people weren't stronger than the bond to the institution.

I don't think he does... It's a fair statement to say, "Bob Huggins is an excellent coach and that's who I want my kid to play for." No problemo.

I also get the notion that the ties between team-mates is "stronger" than the ties to the institution.

But I'll also say this: living in Morgantown and watching the way some of the old Mountaineer greats embrace--and are embraced--by the school and the Mountaineer fans makes me notice how...different...the relationship is between UC and former players.

The quote just caught me off guard.

The Huggins thing had elements of a cult. I think Cronin did a decent job of reaching out to those players, but the transition would have been a lot smoother had Bob's departure been handled differently.

Another way of looking at it is that Zimpher wouldn't have been obliged to terminate Huggins so abruptly if he had behaved himself. He was given a second chance, and he very publicly blew it.

My dad was a conservatory-trained (CCM) violinist who enjoyed a long career with Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Anyone who thinks that I should therefore be a competent musician would be greatly disappointed. The only instrument I can play is the stereo. Neither is Mike Brown the football legend that his father was.

Fathers and sons... It'll be interesting to see if KMart Jr. becomes a force and lives up to expectations.

When he was still pretty early in his playing career, Nick Van Exel donated a significant amount to UC to fund a scholarship.

Sure there's Nick, Terry, Mel and a few others that have given back, but there's many more who haven't.

I'm not suggesting that it's all Nancy's fault, but it would have saved the program years of grief for Huggins to have been eased out and replaced with AK or Martin in a way that ensured continuity. Maybe this wasn't possible in hindsight, but I see no evidence that it was actually tried.

Zimpher did some great things at UC. But she really fouled up the most public part of the university (the basketball program).

Sometimes I think we give Zimpher too much credit for the Huggs fiasco. Let’s not forget this was orchestrated by the BOT. I still will not give Wyler my business and told them so. Phil Cox was another one on that board who deserves his share of the blame.

No thinking person ever questioned her for wanting a change. We questioned how it was done. Before I ever fired a sub I made sure I had the people and process to at worst minimally impact the organization.

Seems she should have consulted one of the profs on organizational change. In reality I think she just did not give a damn.

Yep. People act like she made a unilateral decision to get rid of Bob.

People are brought into leadership roles tasked to make unpopular decisions. I've seen it many times in my professional career. My guess is one of the questions in her interview with the BOT was whether she would have a problem with ousting an employee that was beloved by a significant portion of the community.

If you knew anything about the situation, you'd hardly call Mr. Wyler the at-fault party.

Yet another thread that makes me convinced that Huggins, Zimpher, and every UC fan over the age of 35 will have to be dead before we stop reading threads like this.

Unless we win a national championship.

The situation was legendary in the local automobile business.

One of the first things to come out of Westwood when Cronin was hired was how he was blown away by all the support from former players.
