MyBB Kinda OT: Kenyon Martin, Jr.
So tonight, the WVU talking heads were reviewing BB recruiting for WVU. They noted that Kenyon Martin Jr. is coming into Morgantown for an Official Visit. They also noted that neither Kenyon Martin Jr. nor Kenyon Martin Sr. have any connection to WVU, but quoted K Mart (Sr.) as saying, "I didn't attend the University of Cincinnati, I attended 'Bob Huggins U.'" They indicated that K Mart was reportedly steering his son to play for Huggins at WVU and that WVU right now is considered to have the "inside track" for the younger Kenyon Martin. (Though, apparently Penny Hardaway's Memphis Tiggers are also on K-Mart Jr's short list.)

I wasn't aware that Kenyon had any animosity towards UC... He's one of my favorite Bearcats, he is one of the reasons I started watching UC basketball. I know we have also had tenuous relations with some of our other alumni over the years.

I dunno… I found the whole matter unsettling.

Kenyon experienced tremendous development as a player when he was here, and I imagine he credits Bob for a lot of that. I don’t think that’s unusual.

Kenyon and Bob had one of the closest player coach relationships I've seen. He has no animosity towards UC but it wouldn't surprise me if he were more loyal to Bob than UC.

Long shadows cast by Bob's ouster.

Surprised that Mick's UC is not on his short list.

If I were Kenyon Martin Jr UC would be at the bottom of my list. Way too big of shoes to fill coming here. I would rather go elsewhere and not have to be compared to my dad every second of my college career.

I wouldn't come to UC if I were him, either. With that said, his name is Kenyon Martin, Jr. He's going to be compared to his dad every time he steps on a basketball court.

I think Kenyon expressed some animosity to uc for the way they treated Huggins but that is long ago, the people involved with that are gone and he's expressed recent support for the university.

Kenyon is one of my favorite Bearcats ever, but that is a damn shame to hear a UC alum slight the university like that, regardless of how much credit he gives for Bob for his development.

I agree. When you're one of three to have your jersey in the rafters it's not very becoming. But then again, for all his greatness on the court, I don't think political correctness is one of Senior's strengths.

It does make sense though that he and Huggins had a special relationship. Mick, nor really any other coach at UC, could leverage that the way Bob could. So if Junior becomes a Mountaineer, I at least understand that.

RE: Kinda OT: Kenyon Martin, Jr.
Quote:“That was my guy,” Martin said. “Cincinnati was the school, but I went to the University of Bob Huggins. I came out of high school that way, and I brought that to Cincinnati, that mentality, that no-lose, taking no stuff off of anybody. If you want to knuckle up, we can do that. We can go in the room and brawl it out. It all started with basketball, and we had the same mentality when it came to basketball – that no-holds-barred mentality. We’re going to go out, we’re going to compete at a high level, we’re going to play hard each and every possession, and that’s what Hugs appreciated about me and that’s what I appreciated about the way he coached the game. So it worked.”

Here's the full quote. I don't read this as a slight at the university at all. He's not saying anything negative about UC. He has great admiration and love for Coach Huggins. I think people are reading too much into this.

In the past I remember reading a blurb that Kenyon Martin Sr didn't want him to follow him at UC because he was concerned the expectations would be way too high for him at UC following in his footsteps. Valid argument, though I think most fans would be thrilled to have him and understand he is not his father.

He is supportive of the university. He came to practice last year when we were in LA. The guy doesn't have to disown the guy that coached him here.

Given the amount of time teams spend together I'd be surprised if the bond with those people weren't stronger than the bond to the institution.

I'm not sure all of the posters on here can handle this train of thought.

I don't think he does... It's a fair statement to say, "Bob Huggins is an excellent coach and that's who I want my kid to play for." No problemo.

I also get the notion that the ties between team-mates is "stronger" than the ties to the institution.

But I'll also say this: living in Morgantown and watching the way some of the old Mountaineer greats embrace--and are embraced--by the school and the Mountaineer fans makes me notice how...different...the relationship is between UC and former players.

The quote just caught me off guard.

When did PDoc beat feet out of here? How many BOT members from that era still serve?

And how many NZ supporters still post here?

Surprised I haven't seen this on here yet. KMart posted on his Instagram that Kenyon Jr.'s final four schools are TCU, UCLA, Vandy, and WVU.

The Huggins thing had elements of a cult. I think Cronin did a decent job of reaching out to those players, but the transition would have been a lot smoother had Bob's departure been handled differently.
