Homecoming surprised me but the others are decent. ODU would have been around 22 in my mind without the weather. North Texas would have been pretty close to Troy maybe 500 less. Which would have put us around 18.2k.

I think it's a little bush league to blame the weather for the ODU game. Season opening game the first year of FBS against an in-state school, that should be a sellout. Homecoming has been larger in the past, though we had about the worst "name" opponent we could have had.

The weather really did kill the attendance at the ODU and North TX games What made it worse was the poor inclement weather management by Liberty. They seemed to be really confused and unprepared for the storms. I'm sue how they handled both games turned off a decent number of fans and left them with a bad impression. Hopefully, they've made changes for next year.

RE: 2018 Football Attendance
I thought LU handled the weather really well at the ODU game. What else could they do? They kept the fans and team safe.

I am a little disappointed by attendance, but it’s not unexpected. We don’t have that many fans.

Rather than just push everything back in half hour or one hour increments, they just kept delaying stating 30 minutes after the last strike. They didn't announce them well, they 45 different social media accounts and the only announcements were through LUPD's Twitter account, which no one follows. The PA announcer, LUPD, and the lemon-lime guys were on different pages. They ordered the stadium to evacuated, closed the gates, wouldn't let anyone in, etc. It was just a cluster, and that was just the ODU game. The North TX game was conducted in similar fashion, only with worse weather as the game went on. Hopefully, next season they'll come up with simple inclement weather policy and plan and announcements, and stick with it.

Ultimately, consistent winning will put butts in the seats. They also need to get to only 1 FCS game per year. i don't know how sustainable it will be to play 2 FCS games a year, fan interest wise. I understand for now, it was a scheduling necessity, but nobody wants to return for Homecoming to see us play Gardner Webb (who probably would've been a better draw than Idaho St).

The last part is the pregame ceremony and in game music selection could get better. IMO 2014 was the model year, the ceremony was hyped, and the atmosphere was alot more fun. While I think alot of what we do is better than say Wake and VA Tech, it's still rather bland. Oh and the Turbulence song prior to kickoff has run it's course. Rant over.

RE: 2018 Football Attendance
Liberty had 16,571 as an average in 2017.

Our current average would be 9th in FCS in 2017.
We would only be above average compared to the MAC in 2017.
To average 20,000 for 2018, we need to average 25,786 the remaining two home games.

I think we have a small but passionate group of fans. We don't get many fairweather fans as we didn't get a boost moving to FBS. We don't depend on the visiting team for a crowd. Being a winner doesn't boost attendance.

There's no doubt in mind that the weather in September really hurt our attendance this year. So with a good start with Syracuse at home next fall and we'll probably see an increase next year, especially if we finish well this year. If we win consistently, rather than continue with mediocre to average 5-6 win years, attendance will i fact increase.

On top of that, I think Liberty needs to do more locally beyond billboards to increase attendance in football and basketball. They definitely have their work cut out for themselves with basketball, because parking is atrocious.

Wait, what?!?!? 17k is NOT a solid G5 attendance figure.

Certainly not a bragging point, but the Sunbelt averages in the 17s and the MAC in the 15s. I assume that's what solid means here.

RE: 2018 Football Attendance
Well our average attendance is better than 5 CUSA schools so far. That’s including two games with horrible weather. We also rank 110 out of 130 FBS schools so far. Not too bad if you ask me.

RE: 2018 Football Attendance
I really think the weather (and how they handled it) killed a capacity crowd for the ODU game and killed at least 2-4K for UNT. As far as Homecoming, I think playing Idaho State and the fact that they really scaled back the activities were the biggest reasons for the decline at that game.

I'm, also thinking that the reserved seating only plan for the Baptist side has probably hurt attendance some too. It's all growing pains, but the Baptist bleachers probably need to be general admission again. I think they also need to reduce the ticket prices and do what's necessary to really put butts in the seats for the NMSU game as it's Thanksgiving weekend without the students, we could see a big drop in attendance.

RE: 2018 Football Attendance
Bad weather is not unique to Liberty home games. Others have to deal with mid-week games or 11:00 AM kickoffs.

I was hoping for better attendance this year. It is important as it helps show the strength (or lack thereof) of an athletic department and support. If we want in on conference realignment, if we want to be pursued and to have choices to where we want to go, we need fans to show up, donations to be made, and viewers to watch on television. Those are the things that we have control over.

I challenge you to find any other team that’s had 50% of home games with that weather. It was unique to have that much bad luck.

Anybody want to take a guess at the N.M. State game attendance? I’m thinking 12-13,000 would be a great showing.
