Yes, in the last game they started a true freshman, Zack Wilson. He was 67% in completions with 4 TDs and 1 int, so he played very well for a true FR, although Hawaii
gives up 426 yards per game is 101st in total defense. I am not sure why they made the switch, since their SR QB has good stats. For me, we need to put a lot of pressure on Wilson, and make him uncomfortable and force mistakes, as is typical with young QBs.

Could be that they have a smart coach that wanted to get some experience for his back-up against a weak opponent and/or is planning for the future.

NIU should be mixing in some of our back-up QBs on occasion to give them some live game experience in case they are needed.

"BYU also released its new depth chart Monday, and to no one’s surprise freshman Zach Wilson is listed as the starting quarterback. Wilson replaced six-game starter Tanner Mangum two weeks ago and led the Cougars to a 49-23 win over Hawaii."
https://www.sltrib.com/sports/byu-cougar...uld-enjoy/

While the true FR being listed as the starter on the depth chart does not necessarily mean he will start and be the new QB, this and from what else I have read it sounds like the BYU coach decided to go with the true FR as his starter, at least for the foreseeable future.

It would be great to get our back-up QBs some live game experience, but with how close our Ws have been I am not surprised we have not seen them. It seems we could have seen Thompson (who seems to be the clear # 2) later in the Iowa and Florida St, games.

Just a rumor though.

We desperately need a solid (non-MAC) victory to get our collective confidence back & create some optimism and perceived relevancy. Even if we beat a ranked Buffalo team in the MACC it would not mean more from a public perception (and a large segment of the NIU fan base) standpoint than beating BYU this weekend.

Beat BYU, run the table in the MAC and then win our Bowl Game (even if it is a G5 matchup) and we have the makings of a very good year and huge upside for next year.

I believe in this team and know they are a few plays here or there from having a magical season. I know they have also dodged some bullets such as the EMU game. This team plays extremely hard and never gives up. A testimony to the players and coaches. They need some much deserved love from the fans. I know I am preaching to the choir on this board.

Go Huskies!

And you definitely don't want to hear most of us singing.

4-0 in the MAC is a good start. They really deserve to play in front of more fans. I get annoyed with other people I know that went to NIU, especially one that goes to the occasional tailgate but not the game. C'mon people!

There were alums (including 2 from a summer rtv show) who made it up to DeKalb for homecoming only to watch the game at a bar. Understand skipping weeknights but Saturday homecoming footsteps away? Team deserves better fans than that.

Yet we needed Childers to get that experience...agreed, just no game yet where the team could afford that experiment until now. This would be the game to get the #2 qb some action or use hall to run just to see what he could do.

Sutton Smith and the NIU defense will place unrelenting pressure on BYU Freshman QB Zach Wilson to tip to an NIU win. After the game they will wonder what hit them.

That's terrible news. Feel terrible for him. Any chance for a medical redshirt?

What was the issue? Also haven't heard a peep about Drequan Brown and Devin Webster who were both injured in the Iowa game. Anyone have an idea what their injury status is?

He was playing so much better than last year. It is always tough to end a career with an injury. All the best Mr. Smalls.

This is such a shame for Smalls. Since he had been out since the FSU game I had a bad feeling his "undisclosed injury" was significant. It is a shame for Smalls to end his very good NIU career like this, and tough for our defense; we really needed his leadership and solid CB play.

Not that it means much, but the previews are not showing much love for our Huskies against BYU!

This BYU reporter needs some work about his "true facts" about NIU football: "Jordan Lynch, a finalist for the 2013 Heisman Trophy, is an assistant coach for the Huskies, handling the running backs." LOL

All pretty fair assessments, noting NIU's lack of any type of explosive offense.

BYU has a 6'9'' defensive lineman? Expect Childers to have several passes batted away.

Here is the CFN preview of the BYU game.
https://collegefootballnews.com/2018/10/...me-preview

Pretty consistent with the other previews; our D will keep us in the game but the lack of O will result in a close loss. I have never thought too highly of CFN; the least they could do is get the name of our QB right: "Wilson [BYU's QB] won’t be great, but he’ll make a few key throws down the field that NIU’s Marcus Jones won’t." LOL

IMO we need to get our running game going and put a lot of pressure on Wilson to pull this one out.

Well, they're not wrong - Marcus Jones probably won't make throws down the field. Anyway, that's pretty much par for the course for CFN, particularly regarding their knowledge of MAC teams.

Nice team win, defensive pressure was a key, as was "punting" (on the BYU game) and opening the 2nd half with a very effective running game.
