In 1994 Rice finished in a 5-way tie for the SWC title. The tiebreaker for the automatic cotton Bowl berth went to the team that hadn’t been to the Cotton Bowl the longest. It had been two years longer since Rice had been to the Cotton Bowl than Texas Tech had even been in the league.
