That doesn't seem to be the case. Hagan's appointment was the lead story of the Dec. 1, 1966, Thresher. (The Owls' final game of the year was played on Nov. 26 at Baylor. The previous Thresher edition was published on Nov. 17.)
The article ended with this:
Quote:(Hagan) gracefully skirted the question of integrated athletics, but did say he would continue recruiting athletes who could meet Rice's academic requirements, a policy Coach Neely has followed for several years.
Coach Neely, who was also present at the announcement, praised Hagan for his interest in his players and said he was very pleased with the appointment. "I don't think the players know about this (Hagan's appointment) yet, but I fee l they'll be delighted," Coach Neely said.
The appointment came as the Board of Governors at its regular monthly meeting approved Hagan's recommendation by a faculty committee headed by Dr. Alan J. Chapman. The committee made its selection after interviewing "a very large number" of applicants.

Wow, the memory does play tricks. Not as long as I had remembered, but still was a long time considering that Neely had announced before the season.

Since the Hagan announcement came so soon after the Owls' last game of the season, I wonder when the Prothro/Graves discussions with Dr. Chapman et al -- and his didn't-happen-at-the-last-minute news conference -- might have occurred/been scheduled.

Chronicle archives don’t go back that far. At least not online. Don’t know what they have in hard copy. Was that your freshman year?

Since Jess announced preseason, they had all season to do the search.

That would support the Graves story.
