RE: Coach Bloom FIU postgame interview now posted
As usual, appreciate the post/coverage of everything.

My $.02 from what I heard after the game (before getting to reflect/scrub comments at weekly presser). Some changes from comments made a few months ago.

- Seem to think game was much closer than scoreboard or stat sheet showed.

- Still optimistic or at least putting a face of optimism.

- Now taking a long-term view which means playing true Freshman. As has been noted on other threads, upperclassman are now giving way to the youngsters which has good/bad intended and unintended consequences.

- Lots of work/changes going on up-front. Does not get the attention here like QB position but clearly a focus area and no QB is going to be successful if things don't materially improve in the trenches.

- Notice a tone change from him compared to earlier in season about winning. No longer the stated goal (as it obviously cannot be met) but the result/output from doing things right with work ethic, kids, experience, skills, schemes, etc.. Don't want to say he is ok w/ losing but seems to think it is part of the process in rebuilding a program. I think that is important nuance that buys time/patience from people changing 'win' is goal to 'win' is output that happens from getting the inputs right. Now changes player, administration, fan, other coaches, etc. focus from losses to the inputs improving as measuring stick that you take a leap of faith that will result in W's someday. Given the pile of s$#t in his lap right now, that is a good approach vs. just getting everyone more frustrated with another 5 L's. Control what you can control. Team is just not good enough to win but inputs to winning can improve.

Given UTEP was playing La Tech pretty even on road late into the 4Q, gotta have that patience and set up/prepare Rice stakeholders with having 0 wins against FBS competition this season and only a last second win against a sub-.500 FCS team.

I give him credit for working now to change the narrative to the future (vs. present). More than any other one individual in Athletic Dept, the future of overall Rice Athletics is pretty much in his hands right now, including JK..so you have to buy-in/believe in long-term approach.
