Penalties and Goaltending
Captain Obvious post here. We fix these two issues and we will really have something this year.

The players act as the coach does, always have. As far as goaltending is concerned, not everyone can coach goalies effectively. It's a mental game for those guys and he plays too many head games!

Have to get both under control and quickly, otherwise this team wont be better than a .500 record all year. This is the year for Murray to have a good run with this team, we lose a lot of firepower next year.

I said this before the year that our success is going to rely on goaltending and keeping ourselves out of the box. We are struggling in both areas early and its not a recipe for success.

My wife and I were talking about this topic this morning and both agreed on the "Meijer solution" to decrease number of penalties. When our boys were young they loved to go to Meijer. Few things are worse than children acting out or misbehaving in the store. We solved it with a simple tactic. If that happened, one of us immediately took them out to the car...…..no yelling...…..just a simple statement that " you cannot be in the store if you behave like that." A few more times and they learned and changed their behavior. Many times we were complimented on their behavior in public.

Coach Murray could do the same thing. A player takes an unforced (dumb) penalty on Friday night, he finds himself dressed in a jacket and tie walking the concourse on Saturday night.....no exceptions. No yelling, no preaching.....just action. Linking dumb penalties to PT and things would change in a few weeks.

RE: Penalties and Goaltending
Unfortunately I think Murray truly believes most of these penalties are either bad calls or come from playing the gritty style he preaches ("miserable to play against"). His attitude towards officials during games supports this.

The thing is, I don't really think he's wrong, college officials are inconsistent obviously compared to what he's used to. But at some point (it has been 7 years) you have to swallow your pride and adjust the way you play or coach. Murray is a great recruiter and coach at this level but this one issue dogs his teams and has dragged us down year after year.

Could not agree with you more! The problem Murray has is, he won't adjust, he thinks he is right all the time. Ask his former players and coaches. Great coaches adjust to the environment, be it adjusting your game plan to the talent you have and work with what you have or how the game is called. In case he hasn't seen it yet, at all levels of hockey, they are taking the rough stuff out of the game, so being "tough to play against" leads to more dumb and rough stuff.

It's been pretty well noted, the officials do not like him, they do not like him trying to show them up. In that case, stop arguing with them. I believe I mentioned this a few years ago on this board. A successful NHL coach once told me, "in all my years in behind the bench, one thing has never happened.... a ref will never change his call! Why argue? Make your point and move on!"

RE: Penalties and Goaltending
We haven't played nearly as much of that style of a tight checking, self described as "miserable to play against" style for a few years now.

That, and I've seen Andy really back off of his challenging refs in these last three years. Both are old arguments against him.

I think that once goaltending gets worked out, and I'm sure it will, and HB candidate Wade is back, things will be fine.

RE: Penalties and Goaltending
With hockey there is a fine line between playing aggressive, on offense and defensive ends, and being too aggressive. And penalties are subjectively called, so you can do something one game and it gets called a penalty, but the next game, or period, it doesnt. Good players get a sense for that, and also know when you might get away with something because the refs aren't looking. So I think Murray wants his teams to play aggressively, and is a coach who errors on the side of being too aggressive, rather than not aggressive enough.

Which is next weekend....we saw what he did to Denver last year, that would be nice having him to start vs Denver.

Regardless of the reason(s) we have to stop taking more penalties than the opposition. Michigan was 1 for 11 Saturday. Giving Duluth or St. Cloud 11 chances on the PP won't be pretty.
