Exclamation ODUers... your stadium renovations looked awesome!
They showed a lot during the game and sounds like it’s going to be great! One question she said starting soon. Did she mean AFTER football season? It almost sounded like they were going to start during!??!? Either way awesome.

Immediately after last home game (VMI 11/17).

Yeah, the entire demolition and rebuild will happen this offseason. Very aggressive construction schedule. They still haven't released all the little details which means I think they are still fundraising as much as they can to fit as many features as possible.

It will still be small, roughly 21,000 seats. But it will be brand new with seating designed for your average American in 2019 rather than the Americans of 1930 - more breathing room, better flow, better concessions, actual bathrooms. We are ready!

The during part may be in relation to the prep work they've already started doing last summer. Just this week, they installed new lights. They sit much further back than the current poles, so the new layout should be much bigger.

Wow. didn't realize your stadium was 82 yrs old.

I thought the seating capacity was going to increase. Seems almost a waste to build same size stadium with the # of sellouts you've had last few years. I would have thought the new capacity would have been 25-27 k.

Yeah unfortunately we are going to be losing in all future attendance threads, but we are missing some basic needs that must sorely be met before worrying about capacity.

Yeah the first phase will only get us a small increase over what we currently have. The second phase for which we are currently fund raising will supposedly get us close to 30k. I am very happy we are getting close to demolishing that 82 year old dump that lacks even the most basic amenities that most of the stadiums now offer.

Don't forget, one of the biggest reasons for the renovation is because the current building needs a total structural upgrade. The clam shells were built in the 30s to create jobs, it does not meet the code of today. All Monarchs would love a 30k building in phase 1 but we can't get that money due to a bill that was passed (which I believe was made to purposely screw ODU). While I think the clam shells give the stadium a really cool and unique look, not building it square really limited capacity (the ends of each section are only a few rows deep) and eliminated any feasible expansions, but I'm sure back then they weren't thinking of any of that lol

FWIW, phase 2 is slated to start in just a few years. Expected to have the money raised for it by 2021. But we all know that doesn't guarantee anything.

yep. The Once east and west stands are now reduced to dirt and piles are being driven to start the actual work.

They were but they made it so there was no real way to expand.

It was impressive to watch them take it down so fast. I stood there for maybe a hour and some change and watched an entire section (117 I think) go away in 15-20 minutes or so. 82+ years gone in like 72 hours.
