Taos DA announces upcoming retirement following criticism of NM Compound case
Quote:ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Eighth Judicial District Attorney Donald Gallegos announced his upcoming retirement on Facebook Wednesday.
In the post, Gallegos referenced an editorial in The Taos News which called for his resignation.
Gallegos said, "I will take the Editor’s (and most certainly the Publisher and Owner’s) opinion to heart. Therefore, I am announcing my upcoming retirement effective: December 31, 2020."
The district attorney did not rule out running for public office in the future.
Gallegos faced criticism in his office's handling of the case involving five suspects who were found on a compound in Taos County. Eleven children were rescued at the compound and a child's body was discovered after the raid.
However, all were freed after the district attorney's office failed to file the proper paperwork, in accordance with New Mexico law.
The suspects were later arrested and are being held on federal charges.
