@wojespn
I have doubts about how many top players will go this route. Some, yes. But G-League is full of early connecting flights, long bus rides, small gyms. It isn't glamorous. Big-time NCAA ball still has the trappings of exposure, packed houses, private jets. You'll get paid there too

Yes, if Larry Brown is your coach, you will get paid, whether it's D-League or "college".

All these regular top 15 teams are paying players. Even teams like wku are cheating.

It's just going to make the cost of doing business increase for schools like Kansas, Arizona, Louisville, Oregon, etc.

Unfortunately, this is very accurate.

Sad state of affairs with the gutless, biased NCAA behind the wheel of the bus.

The NBA informed teams no changes to allow HS players into Draft will happen prior to 2022, sources tell ESPN. NBA/NBPA have been negotiating to change age eligibility to 18. HS players could already go directly into G-League -- it’s just now elite can make $125K instead of $35K.

True, but the violent temperament and irreverent behavior certainly will!

stabbed you in the back implies that the NBA had some kind of deal with memphis and went back on it.

yeah certain colleges and their sneaker overlords might be able to pay you more under the table and get your ass caught up in an FBI/IRS investigation. but this way you get a legit salary AND agents and sneaker companies still have to compete over you. and you can make money off your likeness.

I don't know their status but the G League said they will not sign players that are committed.

Poll question: who here has ever watched an NBA G League game or some part thereof?

I haven't read this, but I strongly doubt the NBA will take any sort of hard-line stance on commitments. My guess is that it'll just mean that anyone who signed a National Letter of Intent will have to secure a release from their school before signing a contract with the G-League (since the NLI is, essentially, an employment contract). Good luck ever getting another 5-star or even high-4-star commitment again once you play hardball and force a kid to forego 200K+ after they ask out, though.

Ratings have never been the point for the G-League. The whole thing's designed to be run at a financial loss with the benefit of developing players/coaches/front-office-staff as the payoff. As a developmental pipeline for the NBA, the NBA GMs/scouts absolutely monitor the G-League closely. If they're serious about getting these kids in the pipeline early too I'm sure there will be special accommodations made for these teenagers that maximizes the developmental opportunity for them.

The Mavs G-League team plays in nearby Frisco and they do pretty well attendance wise.

I went to an Austin Toros game back when they played at the Austin Convention Center because Darius Washington was on the team.

Jocks at Duke, Stanford, Northwestern etc will not go to the G League but to a lot of kids straight out of slums $125,000 looks pretty good. We already know a great many don't graduate. Most will not make the NBA at least this way they will get something.

Calipari wants the NBA to pay the schools (perhaps through the NCAA) the same amount it would cost to send them to college for 8 semesters. So they could come back and attend university after they failed to get into the NBA.
