Bowl Game
Anyone think we end up in the Cure Bowl this year? I saw a bowl projection today with Liberty vs Houston.

No.

I think we go 6-6, call it a great first FBS season, and get ready for next season, stay home.

But a bowl game would be mighty cool.

RE: Bowl Game
Right now, I'd guess Liberty has about 20-25% chance of playing on December 15.

78 teams are needed to fill out 39 bowl games. Two of those 78 will play in a bowl, plus the Nat'l. Championship game. Not only does LU have to be eligible, but there can't be any other eligible team that gets left out.

So, if you have lots of spare time, you can scroll down the list of all 130 FBS teams and try to calculate how many of them are likely to win 6 or more games (a handful already have, of course). If you come up exactly 78, and if Liberty is one of them, let us know.

30 will automatically be eliminated, I did the math, so we need another 23 teams to not qualify. I doubt we get that many more.

If Liberty beats Idaho State — “trust but verify” as the Gipper used to say — then I’ll probably make my own calculations on which teams will get into a bowl game, after all the Saturday scores are in.

RE: Bowl Game
Interesting wrinkle here is that a few teams had a game cancelled by weather and end up playing 11 games. Southern Miss, for example, could very well end up 5-6.

That's a good point. Some of these cancelled games could make a difference for who goes to bowl games.

Last year, there were three bowl eligible teams that did not go to bowl games. Unfortunately, two were from the MAC (Buffalo and WMU). I think there were some 5-7 teams that went to bowl games either two or three seasons ago. There is some hope.

RE: Bowl Game
Assuming Liberty meets the qualifications of being bowl eligible, they would be the last pick of bowl eligible teams before 5-7 teams are chosen to fill vacancies. This is due to being in the final year of transition.

ESPN's Sherman is predicting/projecting us to play Houston in the Cure Bowl, Anthlon has us playing GA Southern, and the Orlando Sentinel has us playing ULM. Granted, there's alot of football and winning left to do. But I like the sounds of that. Apparently, we're doing something right.

If Liberty can beat UMASS and NMSU and win one of their two FCS games, they will more than likely be in a bowl. This year I don't think there will be enough 6-6 or 6-7 teams. Liberty would be the last bowl pick before a 5-7. If Liberty gets 6-6 and two of the wins are FCS, then they are dependent on a NCAA waiver. That could get dicey unless the NCAA provides another school a similar waiver for this bowl season.

Hope you all can take care of business against UMASS and NMSU. I would love to see Liberty make a bowl this year. 04-cheers

RE: Bowl Game
Is anybody really gonna be upset if we finish 6-6 and don’t make a bowl game? I will be ecstatic if that is how the season ends. It would be an incredibly successful rookie season.

RE: Bowl Game
Agree that 6-6 (and no Cure Bowl) would represent a very successful FBS-debut season. But no reason to aim low, right?

FWIW, Arizona State just lost a key home-game to stanford. The Sun Devils now 3-4, and their path to 6-6 just got a lot steeper/rockier.

The loser of the Air Force/UNLV game tomorrow night will be in a very rough spot, too, as far as reaching 6 wins on the season.

I know typically we would need 5 FBS wins and an FCS win but doesn’t the new rule put in a 6-6 team over an 5-7 regardless?

No, the rule is five fbs and 1 fcs. I thought was part of the process but it is not, NCAA has to grant a waiver for only four FBS wins. I think if it was not a transition year, they would likely grant it. The two fcs win waiver basically is giving them a waiver for the transition year as well. Common sense would say do it, but that likely means the NCAA won't.

Saw where a few more projections have us playing either Houston or Coastal.

RE: Bowl Game
Barring a lot of really shocking upsets, there is just no way that there will be 78 FBS teams with a 6-6 (or better) record. So from Liberty’s standpoint, the question is whether the Cure Bowl may if they choose (and if so, will they want to choose) a 5-7 APR team over a 6-6 (or hopefully 7-5) Liberty team.

If we are 7-5 the Cure Bowl has to take us if they can’t fill the spot.

What about 6-6?

As long as we have 5 FBS wins. If we are bowl eligible and either the Sun Belt or AAC can't fill the Cure Bowl, we get a slot before an at-large selection.
