ODU @ WKU
OK, this is a realistic win for us.
WKU is not a good team.

On offense the Hilltoppers are better passing than rushing. On paper better passing than Marshall, but without a Tyre Brady.
Like Marshall, their running attack is more or less anemic; as it is averaging only 3.2 yards per carry and a total of 631 yards through six games. Oh wait...03-banghead
The WKU passing game has been inconsistent, but can be good, and they have used 3 Quarterbacks this season, seemingly settling on Freshman Davis Shanley (67%), although 6' 4" 230 lb Sophomore Steven Duncan presents the most problems for us as he is a good 65% passer and a prolific runner.

WKU defense is top 100 in both the pass(63) and rush(79). Marshall was #10 vs the rush but 114 vs the pass. We should have done a little better in the air IMHO.

WKU:
Lost a close game to FCS Maine
Lost a close game to very poor Louisville (won in the stats)
Lost close game to Marshall (ODU rushed better on Marshall than WKU did)
Got blown out by Charlotte.

This is a game we certainly can win, realistically maybe the only other one besides VMI and Rice.

If our defense plays the less than mediocre WKU rushing attack like it did Marshall (also less than mediocre until us), and the Hiltoppers play QB Steven Duncan, we are in big big trouble and....WKU can pass too.
On the other hand, if we run like w did on Marshall, and if we can get some semblance of protection for BL, the offense could roll.

No score prediction this time, as I am not optimistic that our defense could stop Oscar Smith right now.
03-hissyfit

EDIT: ODU is 65th in the Nation in total offense, sandwiched between Texas and Florida.

I mean, Coach Wilder said his team can match up with anyone in the country.

But on the Wake up with Wilder Show, it's always one play away from this and one play away from that.

When is this defense going to put it all together and play 60 solid minutes?

For ODU to win, the offense has to outscore WKU. I don't think the defense will show up. When have they?

Out of 129 FBS schools, ODU is ranked 127 in total defense. And no, this isn't all on Nagy.

The good news vs. WKY is they still haven't gotten the running game going. Marshall got their running game going vs. MTSU when they King (27-165) and Anderson (17-71) were used. Samuel is their best back, but he's only rushed more than 10 times in 1 game. Hope that continues. He's an enormous step down from Tyler King though.

The best thrower for WKY is Eckels, but he's questionable this week. Shanley and Duncan are dink and dunk guys with Duncan being the better runner.

Their offense is really bad. The matchup vs. our defense is bad vs. bad.

On offense, we should be able to move the ball. The pass defense is pretty solid, but the quality of rushing offenses they have faced is much better than the quality of passing offenses. I think we can move the ball well on them.

Should be a close game. Turnover/finishing of drives could make the difference.

Hate to blame losses on the refs because many plays determine the outcome, but last year against WKU was the worst momentum changing call I’ve ever seen. When our DB was called for unnecessary roughness while breaking up a pass late in the game with WKU driving. Live action it was a bad call, replay proved it to be a horrendous call. That call, in essence, won the game for them since they went on to score.

At least the calls at ECU this year were tough/close ones, the one last year vs WKU was simply missed. I’m still bitter about that one.

Let’s hope we can win this one on the field.

I hope Wilder sticks with his words from interviews over the last few days that he plans for design passing plays to TEs over the middle and moving Duhart and Fulgham inside. Using the middle of the field more is going to help BL move the ball. Checking out stat leaders I saw LaRussa is 2nd in CUSA and 30th in the nation in passing yards. Not bad for not playing much of the first 3 games of the season. DuHart leads CUSA and is 4th in the nations at receiving yards.

Unfortunately the "dink and dunk" can kill us as we play too far off the receivers and then tackle poorly which makes these easy throws turn into big gainers or at least let them move the chains which keeps our defense on the field for long periods of time.

This.

FWIW, Duncan is not a "dink and dunk" qb.
He may be playing one because he stayed at Holiday In Express last night, but he has a big accurate arm.

You can have a huge arm and still dink and dunk. Maybe it changes after more experience but it is what it is to this point. He's averaging 6.2 yards per attempt and 9.5 yards per completion.

Blake is at 7.7 ypa and 12 yards per completion.
Williams is at 6.3 ypa and 12.4 yards per completion. (Williams low ypa because of lower completion percentage)

I have always thought that we play way too far off the ball ..... with the cushion we give it makes a 6-7 yard down and out almost a sure thing -- consistently moves the chains - add this to poor DB tackling and there you have it. Marshall gave a DB clinic
in effective DB tackling technique -- they consistently did a great job in open field tackling, great technique, wrapping up and making the receiver/runner pay for stepping on their turf. In my opinion, they were not better athletes than ODU, just better coached.

We play a lot of zone which is why we play so far off the ball. The problem is we cant stop the run so everyone gets sucked up inside.

This would be a satisfying win - especially since we have never beaten them. But any win would be satisfying at this point. So tired of losing...

Our defense is boring/predictable/lacks imagination. I never see any unique schemes to confuse the offense. I’m a Steelers fan and expect creativity with zone blitzes.

You people crack me up.

As an Eagles fan, I expect us to run the Philly Philly. I'd also be ok if we became world champions using our backup QB.
