OSU BB HC Chris Holtmann's Thoughts on Playing Cincinnati
elevenwarriors

Interesting to read that he didn't know it would be the opening of our "new" arena when he agreed to the dates.

This is going to be a one time thing for the Bearcats and Buckeyes. Hopefully they can come up with that all Ohio tournament.

I honestly can't believe that O$U agreed to it to in the first place. They must have been so scarred by their nobody-wants-this-job coaching search that they were willing to give Holtmann a little leeway in scheduling.

After '02, they'll never play football here again.

I find it incredible that they agreed. Does Bohn have picture of Holtmann with Stormie or Christine?

At least the guy's honest when he talks about OSU's reluctance to play any in-state school. They've got to keep that superiority myth alive, even if they know it's baloney. I hope we give them a fitting welcome, and I hope we send them skulking back to Columbus with a loss under their belts.

"Ohio State, the state’s flagship program" Gimme a fricking break. What a bunch of pompous, delusional, and uninformed rubes.

Cincinnati: #15 in all time wins at 1788 with a winning percentage of .639.
OSU #30 in all time wins at 1670 with a winning percentage of .610.

Cincinnati: 2 National Championships both over tO$U. Last one in 1962.
OSU: 1 National Championship. Last one in 1960.

Cincinnati: Oscar Robertson.
OSU: Take your pick. Doesn't matter. They were not better than Oscar.

Stop acting like you are doing us a favor. We are the flagship program.

That would certainly crush the standard set by Michigan, but there is still time.

Only area UC is behind is NCAA tournament wins. Twenty years of missed opportunities and bad luck. Cincinnati has been awesome in the regular season, probably one the best non blue blood in terms of conference championship and overall wins since 1992.

I believe Holtmann is 2-0 against Mick. I do not buy his not knowing about opening of the "new" arena. This is a big game for them. Ruin opening night and distance themselves from an in-state opponent. They are chomping at the bit for this one.

They've been to more Final Fours too, but that just argues that they can't close on the big stage. In my mind, the programs are close enough historically (edge to UC) that not having an annual game is a disgrace. As most of you can tell, I do have a good deal of respect for OSU as a university, don't see them as our enemy and like their alumni (as opposed to Miami), but I have no respect for their continual decision to dodge us in basketball.

I agree. All the "pressure" is on UC; the atmosphere will be electric. We've all witnessed teams coming out too pumped and bricking shots early (some Crosstown Shootouts come to mind). That might translate to falling behind early. I expect UC to prevail but I look for a tournament type game with lots of lead changes along the way.

I'd feel better if the ball was in Gary Clark's hands early in this one but we'll see who steps up on that front line for UC.

i feel tre could almost average double figures offa offensive rebounds alone. the obvious big man answer is eli. he's already been compared to bill russell (former coach ld) and at least an nba starter (skyblade). there's no reason he can't just be like a taller hicks. one of those junkyard dogs

'member that time he stayed in the game after he got visibly concussed? can't find that video. not even sure what game it was but i feel it was somewhat important. like ville or something

ohio state's got a freshman i really wanted to go to notre dame. luther muhammad. love mike brey. he's gonna take over for coach k

RE: OSU BB HC Chris Holtmann's Thoughts on Playing Cincinnati
In the real world, this was a great move by OSU. This is OSU's chance to burst our bubble just when we feel we're on the verge of achieving something great.

It's brilliant really, because in nearly any other year the pressure would be on OSU. But this year the pressure is on UC. With the opening of then ew arena, we HAVE to win this game.

if we had to win this game we'd schedule central northwest bowling green state. it'd simply be nice if we won this game. good resume builder

Why is there pressure to win this game? For either side? We've been clamoring to play Ohio State for decades and we finally got a home and home. It's a big time game but we're certainly not strangers to this environment. This isn't Xavier or even a key conference game that has far bigger implications so just enjoy it and play our best.

I think you're seeing OSU as a lot more Machiavellian about this than they are. It's not some 3 dimensional chess play to make UC look bad. They're a program that hit a rough skid at the same time they brought in a coach who seems genuinely interested in playing more in-state schools. Nobody expected Holtmann to turn things around up there as quick as he did, and I think they saw this as merely a way to get some excitement and buzz for a program that was expected to still be rebuilding. I think the obvious explanation here is the right one. That and Ono was gone. I'm not sure that they would have been keen on offering UC some kind of olive branch while he was still here clamoring for "multiple flagships" and telling people that OSU talked all the other Big Ten schools into blackballing UC out of the AAU. Basketball rivalry aside, there is nowhere near the level of institutional bad blood between OSU and UC as there was/is between them and Miami and OU.

Wow! I got quoted like I know something. I'm not sure I said exactly that though. I guess misquotations are part of being famous :).

I did say that Nsoseme has elite athleticism and the athleticism to be an NBA starter (if not a star). But, he will need significant work on the offensive side of his game if he's going to reach his full potential. I also think he is an immediate upgrade over Washington.

As you said, the bigs this year are set to do well by being junkyard dogs. I expect us to be near or at the top of the NCAA in terms of offensive rebounding.
