Sadly true. Philip is a great guy but a bad head coach.

Unpopular opinion: P. Monty isn't as bad as people think. No, he's not Nick Saban, but he shouldn't be fired at this time.

Edsall knows how to recruit the Northeast. He probably wouldn't be a good fit at either of those schools. Nice suggestion tho.

I just don't think you have any room to talk smack about Phillip Montgomery. Scotty Montgomery sure, but Phillip Montgomery has a 10 win season as a head coach, Edsall does not. Nor will he ever. Go ahead and find a way to change the subject to women's basketball if you desire.

Name an issue that we have that isn't fundmentally caused by him. Every close loss we have had can be directly linked to his decision making. Every personnel issue we have is linked to a recruiting decision by him. Our offense is horrible, thankfully our above average defense keeps us in most of the games.

Monty doesn't play the game. He can drill these guys all day, and make them practice to correct mistakes but he can't actually make them stop committing stupid penalties, or not turn the ball over, or not miss 3 field goals in a row. He just can't. The team is getting better and I believe the coaches are doing all they can to correct mistakes. For example: they've been practicing ball security a lot, and guess what...they didn't have a single turnover this last game.

As for blaming him for recruiting...well that's a little premature. The 4 year guys we have now were his first recruiting class which happened during the coaching transition. So you just throw that class out. And the next class was basically his first actual class to recruit as a head coach. So you're probably not gonna see too many all-stars out of that one. He gets a pass from me there. The next 2 classes have been better I believe. You really can't tell for sure on recruiting until year 6 when the 3rd and 4th classes are upperclassmen. That's just my opinion.

This team is right on the verge of doing really well. To fire the head coach at this point would be ridiculous. Especially when he's running a clean program and taking steps to get better.

People have zero patience these days. They could be sitting on a gold mine and throw away the opportunity at something great because they have to wait a little longer to get to it. And considering this is Tulsa where we don't have money to just throw around on a whim we need to be patient.

So despite 5 games of evidence you think one game of improvement changes that? What about all of last year?

Team discipline is all coaching period. Well coached teams rarely hurt themselves, in turn overs or penalties and rarely if ever looked confused. These are all things we have been doing for four years now, with it becoming progressively worse each year.

He had two plus years with Skipper who carried the ball like an elementary school kid. That situation got progressively worse, go back and look at last year.
We had five or six games that were close, we almost won. This year we have 3 already.

He chose not to recruit a scholarship kicker, that's on him.

Our team is not "getting better" our defense is improving. Our offense has been regressing. 79 yards passing is our lowest since the Cooper era probably though I haven't gone back to check. Certainly since the Burns era.

This isn't a knee jerk reaction. Montegomery accomplished with his first two years what our previous coach said he could do. Bowl eligible and then compete for a division championship. With Monty's own players he has been awful and his questionable decision making has been exposed. It's a four year trend not a one off and the trend is negative.

We might beat Arkansas Saturday, maybe, if not our solo opportunity at an FBS will be a home game vs UConn. That isn't progress.

Montgomery is a damn good football coach but Tulsa is a tough place to recruit and build a winning program.

Tulsa has a .555 winning %, 35 conference championships and 21 bowl appearances.

UH has a .545 winning %, 11 conference championships and 26 bowl appearances.

Just sayin.

I'd take him over S. Monty, but the bar to clear there is insanely low.

Except for the fact that I don't drink during the work week, and also every other poster on here essentially just backed up what I said regarding the two Montgomerys. Nice try dummy.

Again, as a UCONN fan. You have no room to talk about a football coach that needs to go. Edsall isn't coaching in the old Big East. This league might be better than it was when he had his best years, in the old Big East. Even then, the best he did, was win 9 games. The Big East shouldn't have had the auto bid when a crappy 8-4 UCONN team got whipped by a not so good OU team in that Fiesta Bowl. UCONN's endeavors into major college football has been an utter failure at best.

UCONN sucks at everything except Women's basketball. Please leave the conference so we can get real talent like UAB or Southern Miss in here. Thanks in advance.

I'm Tennessee number 1, who likes Memphis right after that. Not that I have to explain to a TROLL, but the UAB support is because of Alabama trying to sabotage their entire athletics department. It wouldn't let me type in anything after that, so I was unable to put Memphis in there.

Just sayin.

Since 2005 when Tulsa joined C-USA and we re-became conference mates:
Tulsa has a .552 win%, UH has a .657 win%
The H2H is 9-4 in favor of UH

As for Tulsa's ridiculous amount of conference championships, the overwhelming majority of those came from the MVC. UH was part of that conference for 9 years with Tulsa back in the 50's. We won it 4 of those 9 years. Tulsa won it once (the first year we joined). I say none of this to disparage Tulsa, its a great school and we have a lot of history together. Just wanted to make it clear who the big brother is. Lol
