1/22/2019 - Monty in the Morning on 1580 the Fanatic

Coach Majerle joins Monty in the Morning to recap wins against Chicago State and UMKC. It's been a week since I listened to the interview, so honestly don't remember the rest of what they discussed. Have a listen anyway.

I'm not trying to be coy but I like Majerles new attitude. He is a lot more humble and no more crazy insinuations that GCU is just gonna kick everyone's @ss in the WAC now that they are eligible. Sounds like he is also learning being a high strung dickhead is not gonna motivate kids to do better. Perfect example is WAC preseason POY didn't even make the 2nd team and neither did preseason 1st teamer Oscar Frayer. Dudes aging like a president cause of his unrealistic expectations and we will see what happens next year. WAC teams have figured Lever out, Frayer is talented but probably overrated, and I think next year people will have Johnson also figured out. Gonna be another tough season for Dan next year and I'm just wondering even though Phoenix and GCU fans are still enamored with the guy, how long Colangelo is going to put up with 3rd place finishes in the WAC and 1st round exits in tournaments you have to pay to be in that no one gives s $hit about for the big money he is making.

RE: Coach Majerle 2018-19 Season Interviews/Media
Majerle has built a fairly strong mid-major program recruiting players of a certain level. However, I think Majerle has come to realize it is much more difficult breaking the threshold of what is considered a "nationally relevant" mid-major program. NMSU has been dominant in the WAC for years but they haven't been able to crack the top 25 or garner anything better than a 12 seed in the NCAA tournament. Prior to GCU's tournament eligibility, Majerle was chomping at the bit to overtake NMSU; as soon as they were eligible. However, despite Majerle's NBA pedigree, I think his recent failures in the WAC tournament (to NMSU) have humbled him as a coach. If Majerle is going to get GCU to Gonzaga type levels, he is going to need to become a much better X&Os coach, recruit a better caliber of athlete, and instill a higher level of mental toughness. Easier said than done. Right now, NMSU remains the WAC standard.

3/18/2019 - Doug & Wolf on Arizona Sports 98.7

Just found this interview from the end of the season, in between the WAC tournament and CBI. Very complimentary of NMSU and their chances against Auburn and surprisingly light-hearted interview overall. Coach Majerle also discusses the best team they played against this season, the state of GCU basketball and the NCAA Tournament.

His tone has definitely changed over the last 6 years. Much more humble and you can tell he is recognizing that Division 1 basketball is hard.
