Monty probably got a little too conservative but there really wasn't much more he could do.
I agree, I believe Montgomery is a better coach than what he is currently being credited. He made great calls on those two delayed trap plays. He badly needs a QB. What happened to the Freshman kid from Texas, I think his name was Brin, he was supposed to be a gunslinger.
4-10 in games decided by a touchdown.
The issue is Monty.
Our QB situation is due to Monty, our play calling is all Monty, our stupid penalties (team discipline) is all Monty, and if the whole class gets an answer wrong (our fumbles), it's the teachers fault.
The only thing we do well is defense and he has nothing to do with that side. He still manages to put them in negative situations by his play calling, negative penalties, bad situational field/clock/game awareness, and the high rate of turnovers by the offense for scores.
Mason Fine (kid killing it at UNT) wanted desperately to go to Tulsa. President was a 4 star guy. Skipper was pretty good when he first got in there. Boomer looked solid vs Houston. The QBs at TU seem to regress under Monty. Dane apparently greatly benefited from Blankenship and his Blankenships son's tutoring, because everyone else has gone from decent to bad. Boomer should have been passing more earlier in the game, he has been pretty solid with being smart with the ball. He also will pull it down and make a positive play with his feet.
Benefited from the Blakenships? The same Blakenships that everyone also wanted fired, and said was stupid for hiring is sons to coach. And also said his son was a terrible qb coach? Really?
Boomer couldn't hit the broadside of a barn most of that game.
President was a bust I'll give you that. But that happens with every coach.
But hey, if you need a scapegoat I guess go for the latest-greatest target.
Name a QB at high school or college that Bill or Josh has coached who hasn't excelled? Does that make Bill a great head coach? No.
Boomers sure did find that receiver wide open for the TD, he's smaller than a barn. 227 yards on 30ish attempts. Put the ball on the money for the dropped td vs USF. Basically didn't attempt a pass in the 4th quarter, so why would they not load the box?
Scapegoat? Every issue goes back to the coach. That's not scapegoating that's the proper attributation of fault.
I wouldn't quite call what Cody Green did excelling. Even if he did when a conference championship in '12. And I'm not sure Dane was over 55% completion percentage when he played under Blank. Maybe not even 50%. And he sure didn't win many games.
You're talking Boomer's stats against Houston. Against USF's better defense he was 6 of 21 for 79 yards. That's abysmal. Yeah, he probably should've thrown it once or twice in the 4th to keep the defense honest, but we probably wouldn't have had much success with it.
Yes, the HC is ultimately responsible. But people are also too trigger happy on wanting to fire him. The guy even won 10 games just 2 years ago.

I have to agree with HurricaneDrummer about Dane. He floundered some under Blankenship, of course he was younger, but flourished under Montgomery. I do agree that Montgomery's QB recruiting has been disappointing, especially with Mason Fine.
