RE: Can CUSA basketball take that next step
As much as the pods will elevate the top 4-5 teams, aren't they going to bury the guys at the bottom? I mean they will only play a top team once and then all play each other so they won't get that RPI crutch of playing MTSU, ODU, WKU, and MU, for example, twice as in the last couple years.

I expect we'll end up with 5 in the top 125 4-5 in the top 150-200 and 4-5 at or below 300.

At one time maybe, but not since Bobby Lutz was there. Charlotte has won 15 or more games only 2 times since Lutz was fired in 2010, both under Allan Major 2012-13 21 wins, 1st round NIT, and 2013-14 17 wins. In that time frame Charlotte doesn't have a winning record in conference play.
I think clt is mired in facetious hyperbole.

Charlotte was a power in Cusa 1.0 when the league had Louisville, Cincinnati, Marquette, and Memphis. They won the reg season conference championship and/or the tournament several times. They went to the Ncaa tourney almost every year. I take the reference to "knowing basketball" back to that history.

clt cannot dap you. What gives?

that's the clterns fault. clt hasn't reached the required post count under his new account to give rep points yet. but that exclamation point is fire!

Every year I feel like we are really close to getting that second bid. We have also been close to having a team make the Sweet 16. We've had 3 different teams win NCAA Tournament games in this version of CUSA. We need to get multiple bids and we need to have a Sweet 16 team. We are close and I'm hoping this is the year CUSA basketball gets over the hump.

Do you guys think this is the year for CUSA basketball to take another step?

Get Loyola (IL) to join?? Seriously, what it will take is consistent winning in OOC play.

Just wait until we walk into all of your gyms and score 38 points and win.

If Sanchez plays and recruits the same way Bennett does, I could see a 38 point game from Charlotte. In the ACC last year Virginia avged 58 points per game. That is 29 points a half, that won't and don't fly most of the time when you play high profile offense.

With the lack of talent on the Charlotte bench I could very well see a 38 point game from Charlotte this year if Sanchez just comes in, ignores the talent level at Charlotte and just installs his (Tony Bennett) system and just runs with it.

=========================

The top half of the conference will be a decent to improved group. The next step is getting the bottom 4-5 teams to actually be competitive. But I feel as that may never happen. Despite some of the moves in coaching last year I still feel as if there are some schools in this conference that just wish they could actually drop the sport of basketball and be done with it. As I feel they have no intention of ever trying to be competitive.

Yes, BUT does it really matter? Finish 150, finish 300+ you have no chance of postseason either way. The payoff for that will be that when they do have a good year they will have a better chance of at large and good seeding. And if we actually get additional bids and deeper runs... that is $$ for every member.

You guys are attacking Charlotte for going out and hiring what many said was the #1 assistant coach in the country to be the head coach. You are also doing that by saying that a team who went 17-1 in the ACC and 31-3 overall doesn't play a winning style of basketball. 03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao

Charlotte is not Virginia and they will not recruit to that level. However, Marshall is not Duke and Southern Miss is not Chapel Hill either. Time will tell if the new AD made the right decision.

Sanchez the top asst in the nation, now that's funny. He may be good, he may get Charlotte out of the dumpster but he like Bennett (Virginia), Jones (ODU), Romar (Pepperdine) and a few others that play a style of basketball that puts many to sleep and he was far away from being the top asst in the nation.

Not many people want to set and watch a team that plays defense only and runs the shot clock down to 5-7 seconds before even starting to run a set and then score 50-55 points per game. To me that is the epitome of boring.

I could see Sanchez succeeding at Charlotte but I could also equally see him falling on his face.

As it stands right now from last years roster at Charlotte, they have exactly 1 legit DI player in Jon Davis and a few borderline players in Jailan Haslem and Milos Supica. The rest have no business on a DI court as a DI player. That may sound harsh but it was the same way in 2014 in Huntington when D'Antoni took over. The only DI caliber players we had were Ryan Taylor, Cheikh Sane and Justin Edmonds (although Edmonds knee injury severely diminished his play as a senior).

This was the Marshall roster in D'Antoni's 1st year:

Shawn Smith
Stevie Browning
Jay Johnson
Cheikh Sane
C. J. Burks
DeVince Boykins
Aleksa Nikolić
Justin Edmonds
Ryan Taylor
JP Kambola
Tamron Manning
Brett Bowling
Austin Loop
Milan Mijovic

Red Shirt Transfers not eligible:
Stevie Browning
James Kelly

JR College
Jay Johnson

Red Shirt
CJ Burks

HS Recruits:
CJ Burks
Shane Hall (Was on campus 2 weeks and went back home to Paintsville KY)
Aleksa Nikolic

Left Program:
Kevin McNair (Walk on Did not return)
Yous Mbao (Graduated)
Kreem Canty (Told he wasn't welcome back, kicked out)

In year 3 of D'Antoni only Stevie Browning, Austin Loop (Walk on under Herrion), Aleksa Nikolić and Ryan Taylor remained on the roster from day 1 year 1.

So yeah Marshall fans know what a bad roster and bad team looks like. I hope Charlotte gets back on track but unless Sanchez or someone on his staff knows how to develop players it won't happen.

Don’t you get it. It doesn’t matter if you win. He just wants you to score. I’d rather win every game then average 100 pts a game. It might be a little boring to an average fan. But if you watch someone put the lockdown on a team that is fun to watch as well. Do you only like Oregon’s and Auburn’s offense in football as well?
