$23 million research facility
Very impressive. $23 million 30,000-square-foot building on campus will feature cutting-edge laboratories, classrooms, and collaborative spaces.

Very cool but I don’t like that it will be built on the far west part of campus. In my opinion they need to keep focusing on the center of campus (north forty, or knock down some crap apartment somewhere)03-idea

20 acres is a pretty large plot of land to gobble up in the middle of campus. having to walk around that for class would be ridiculous. its a good move to keep it on the west campus with the other research facility, Center for the Study of Family Violence and Sexual Assault.

They are using a 20 acre site on the vacant land west of the Convo. It is they only space on campus that meets the needs. Also, that part of campus is part of the opportunity zone, that gives extra tax incentives to companies locating in such a site

U of I is a major part of this and niu is teaming up with them as part of the Illinois Innovation Network. Rauner has brought up consolidation in some form before so this isn’t a surprise. I think it benefits niu to partner with Illinois’ Research for their reputation. They aren’t building it though. Niu is putting up a lot of the money and the rest is from the network. Great move I think.

The west end makes the most sense. It is developed and niu will eventually build out that way. I see things shifting in that direction eventually and away from east end and greek row.

Sweet. Now we can appeal to those environmental law, food systems, and climate change recruits. 07-coffee3

This is a huge get for NIU. Hopefully it can go towards getting and retaining quality students. It's a solid get for the new president. (It happened on her watch, so it's her get.)

RE: $23 million research facility
Great get for NIU. Looks like 3 U of I campuses and NIU all working together on environmental and sustainability research. Hope it attracts more facilities to the research hub west of campus.

Would have been nice if dumb*ss Rauner had mentioned less U of I and more NIU in his speech, but anything that makes us more of a research hub is awesome. He did though mention that "NIU is one of the great research university's across America", nice to heart that notion out loud.

Wonder if other Illinois schools will be brought in, or will it just be NIU and some U of I locations?

This is the best news to come out of NIU in awhile. NIU needs more of this.

What if.....dare I say.....NIU becomes University of Illinois - Northern or DeKalb?

I have a feeling that this may be on the new President's agenda. Easiest path to get funding and pull out of the tailspin. Probably start offering Ag and Engineering closer to major population areas like UIC is the Medical hub. It probably makes sense based on the state financial mess on how past NIU admins have decimated DeKalb (cough.... Eddie Williams, a most vile human being that damaged a city more than anyone I can think of), but I dislike it.

I like the idea of joining the University of Illinois system. Helps brand NIU into a new light. If it helped increase funding, enrollment, academic rankings and research I'd definitely want to listen. UID here we come!

No thanks. The only good thing would be that if we were DUI or IUD we wouldn't be confused with another school.

What if NIU became part of the UofI system and was just rebranded as "Northern".

Can't believe Springfield realized there are universities in the state outside of Champaign.

I'd be all for it! If it carves out a layer of administration and truly gives operating saving, maybe the budget woes will make it happen in our life times. But keep 'NIU' as the name, nothing to be gained by renaming it.
