RE: Who is going to be...
Top scorer?
I could see Kavas (SU), Durham (CSUB) and C. Toolson (UVU) battling all season for that crown.

Top rebounder?
Fully expect Chuha (NMSU) to return to form. Davis (CSUB) looked strong as a FR last year, too.

Top assist man?
Gimme Bishop (UMKC) or Harris (NMSU)

Top shot blocker?
Not sure I see a strong one in the bunch. I'd be inclined to say McCants (NMSU) if he hadn't gone down with injury, so maybe Frayer (GCU)?

Top marksman?
Durham (CSUB) will keep pace with anyone in 3PT FG made because of the sheer volume he shoots, but Kavas (SU) should dominate in 3PT FG% (again).

Best newcomer?
I'm sure we are all excited about our own guys. I think Johnson (GCU) could make a pretty significant impact in the conference.

Best freshman?
Lots of incoming talent, but I think Lowell (UVU) might end up with the most opportunity to showcase what he's got.

Best athlete?
Again, if McCants (NMSU) wasn't injured, it might be a toss up between him and Frayer (GCU)

RE: Who is going to be...
I think there are newcomers who might change the scoring and rebounding dynamics of some teams. Given Kavas' results last season, one might think he could be Seattle U's leading scorer this season but with a addition of American U. transfer Delante Jones to the team, Jones might become Hayford's #1 scoring option in a revised up-tempo offense (minus slow big man Aaron Menzies).

Chuha could be NMSU's top rebounder but he must improve his post defense to earn his minutes. Then again, Jans is very high on Ivan Aurrecoechea's effort. He might be NMSU best rebounder now that Jemerrio is gone and McCants is injured. As for top Aggie scorer? The jury is out. NMSU has a lot of options. It will be interesting to see who steps up.

CSUB is guard heavy. I could see either Holden, Joiner, or Durham leading the way offensively.

As for GCU, I think Lever will be the Lopes most consistent scorer. But Majerle could also get some big scoring games out of Frayer, Rhymes, and now Johnson. The achilles heel for Majerle's team might be to find a dominating rebounder.

I think the top scorer in the WAC might come from one of the weaker teams who have limited scoring options and must rely on one or two players to carry the team.

Best athlete is Frayer. That guy is so smooth and athletic he makes things look easy. If he played to the level of his athleticism he’d be in the running for best player in the WAC. He reminds me of Banja Sy, tons of athleticism and skill but does not play to it and will only show you spurts.

Frayer is a better leaper than McCants. He is definitely a high flyer. However, McCants has a longer wingspan and better body control around the rim; which allows him to gather the ball from all angles and guide it into the basket. The question is can Johnny's foot fully heal before the start of WAC play? And, how will it effect his athleticism and aggressiveness attacking the basket the rest of the way?

McCants was our best big man before the injury. His game was expanding exponentially. He was our most aggressive, quickest, big man in Spain; and looked to be the heir apparent to Jemerrio Jones on the boards. McCants was also developing 3-point range. Hopefully, this injury is only a minor setback. Because at his rate of development, he is going to be a BEAST by the time he is a Senior. He went from a 6'7 195-lbs entering freshman to a 6'7 225-lb RS Sophomore (30 pounds) without losing a step.

Also, only time will tell. But 6'4 Frosh guard Berrick Jeanlouis might prove to be the best pure athlete (leaping ability and court acceleration) in the WAC in a few years.

Berrick Jeanlouis HS Highlights

I think JeanLouis has the most upside in our freshman class with his athleticism. I think he’ll get more minuets as this season goes on.

I forgot about Joiner (CSUB). He will be in the running for top scorer.

Mohamed Thiam is going to shock everyone the way Pascal Siakam came out of nowhere. I'm interested to see how Lever deals with the expectations and the for sure double teams. He's very emotional and tends to get into foul trouble although the way he acts and Majerle, Lever has never committed a foul in his life. If he can deal with that he will be a monster. If he can't he will be another Josh Braun who shot his wad his freshman year and was mediocre at best the final 3 years of his career.

Doesn't every European basketball player get the same big dumb look on their face whenvthe whistle is blown against them? I think that is a basketball fundamental for them, like layups or boxing out. To be fair to Majerle, I know I've heard him say publicly that Lever has to cut that crap out and just play because it doesn't work over here.

Top marksman/newcomer will be Delante Jones. The former Patriot League FOY shot just under 40% from 3 at American and will take off in Hayford's offense.

Mid-Major Madness agrees with me as far as newcomer goes.
