Good point .....I didn't expect much this year because I knew our OL, QB, and DB were marginal at best. Next year...will be MUCH worse.

I can certainly understand thinking this, but I'm going to hold out a little hope.
At a minimum we'll have a new Defensive Coordinator.

We'll see how our freshman look from here on out this season and we look to have a pretty decent incoming class next year.

Maybe it'll be a case of addition by subtraction. Many senior linemen and D backs graduating, hopefully they'll be replaced by potentially better freshmen.
New coach and Freshman are my justification. Plus no depth and we lose some top WRs.

Kinda sad that at this point in the program, we are pinning hopes on freshmen --- what about all that hypertalk about we need to get through a complete recruiting cycle and then we will reap the rewards of experienced upperclassmen who were recruited at FBS level. Was all that talk by BW complete garbage?

That wasn't just him. That was many on here as well. It's what I was waiting for. This year was supposed to be the year we had ear marked for a few years. Outside the VT win it's been a failure.

RE: Game 7: Marshall at ODU
BW either can’t recognize or can’t coach FBS talent. I’m sure these are some of the best guys he’s ever recruited and they’d be great at the FCS level. That’s why he was genuinely excited. We’ve been beating Howard and Towson for lots of giuys when we need to beat Marshall, Temple, ECU and App St. more. BW just doesn’t know what it takes. How would he? Never been an assistant at the top level. He may figure it out but it could be too late. He needs a few years as a P5 assistant IMO.

There were legitimate reasons for that optimism.

Our first FBS recruiting class as a CUSA member was for 2014.
That was the #2 class in CUSA and 68 overall in the Nation. It included Ximines, Duhart, and Lawry.
https://247sports.com/college/old-domini...l/Commits/

By year three (2016) those players are Juniors and those that were redshirts have gotten playing experience. Consequently we could have expected to see a dramatic improvement.
By 2017 we would have peaked with that class (no G5 redshirts all of their Freshmen) and by 2018 we would have the 5th year seniors left and still been at a high level, especially supplementing FBS recruits each year.

However, we did not apparently maintain the 2014 level of recruiting, dropping to the bottom of CUSA and the Nation since.

Our defensive woes cannot be completely explained by personnel, so, with off season changes there may be hope for improvement.
Overall, however, based on our recruiting ranking post 2014, next season does not, on paper, look anything but ugly.

So far the 2019 class looks fantastic, and if we can supplement that class with quality recruits, then by 2021 we may be a force in CUSA.

04-cheers

This whole game from the start was boring. I genuinely thought we would come to play that day. While it wasn't sold out there was a decent sized crowd but that died off with the on-field product being lackluster. I was literally bored for most of the game. I will continue to support this team but damn they're making it hard to watch. I hope the fans don't completely give up for the next home game but I wouldn't blame them, homecoming or not. At least I got to witness the VT win in person 07-coffee3

Maybe it was just me but it was just boring. No scores in the first, we only got a field goal in the second. The first time I jumped up was when we scored our first TD. But our lack of production on the offensive side just flattened me. We had some great defensive stops but our offense just seemed like they couldn't finish drives. I'll be back in my seats in two weeks though don't worry haha

I had to miss this game but my mom made this comment to me. "Oscar Smith could have stopped Marshall." Which is a dig at both teams.

She may not have been wrong.
The Herd running game was mostly anemic until the ODU game.

The manner in which the Herd carved us up on the ground was stunning.
Prior to the ODU game, the only good game rushing Marshal had was vs Miami [Oh] (38 for 171 @ 4.5 yds per carry)
Against MTSU did they got 209 yards on the ground, but they ran 53 times to do it.

Miami[Oh] was the only game that Marshall got 4 or more yds per carry.
Yet against us they got 319 yards @ 7.1 yards per carry.

Can we all just agree that we suck on defense, starting with the D-line that so many on here praised to the sky before this **** storm started.

There were some who said we would see no drop off between 1st and 2nd string. Man were they wrong. The 1st string isn't even as good as they thught.

RE: Game 7: Marshall at ODU
Ox is killing it.....making it even more impressive. Fox being hurt obviously was a big blow, but Ward/Appough have not progressed from the earlier promise they showed. Not sure what the reasoning behind that is but they have zero sacks and very little pressure. Fox being out has been compiunded by Meiser and Tyson trying to play thru injury.

Partially hurt by injuries but lack pf progress really hurt that unit. That group played extremely well last year ranking in the top 25 in havoc. Huge regression.
