RE: NIU-Ohio odds
Carey was talking about Dennis Robinson and said that until two weeks ago he'd never said Robinson had practiced hard. Last two weeks have been a different (in a positive way) story.

I don't know what scares me more, that a player doesn't practice hard or that it took 1.5 years for the coaches to notice and coach him to that point.

Now I wonder how many other players are in the "don't practice hard category".

RE: NIU-Ohio odds
Coaches can do only so much to motivate, coach, pester, harangue, yell at a player to get them to practice hard. Maybe Robinson, after seeing the field for a few games, realized what happens when he puts in total effort instead of 40/50/80/90%. At this level it transitions to the players wanting to put in the required effort. How come no one says what a great job Carey has done with Sutton? Realized his potential at DE and coached him to consensus All American! I would suspect that multiple coaches have a hand in motivating players and not just those at the position they coach. For some of the board Carey is the end all be all for everything that goes wrong and nothing that goes right. I am not a Carey apologist and fully understand the ultimate responsibility lies with the HC, but there is also responsibility spread around the coaching staff, players and other parts of the program.

I was thinking also that seeing the field a little could make a big difference in motivation to get better.

You absolutely cannot blame coaches for this. This happens all the time. Wolfe was considered a slug the first year he was there. It wasn’t until he tasted some success his work ethic changed. Many times these kids come into these situations relying on their physical talents alone before the realization they have to work to succeed at this level. Kids are motivated by different things and some take longer than others.

So I can answer for myself. I get that these young men are just kids that don't always do things right (see walker arrest article). The quote makes me wonder aloud about the coach saying he finally practiced hard. I mean we all have seen Rudy, right? Some guys just work hard or apply themselves in the right way. Some guys take a while to "get it". But why say it? It makes the player look like he wasn't trying.

The original post didn't say how Carey said it? Are they friends? Was it at a news conference? Don't know but I suppose if I were Carey I would have said something more complimentary such as "he is finally putting all the pieces together".

You know praise in public, criticize in private.

Anyways you do notice the postive contributions Robinson has been making these past few weeks. Keep it up. I'll be cheering.

I recently again gave kudos to the coach(es) that made the Sutton Smith move. Whether Carey was directly involved in that decision or not does not matter; it happened on his watch so he gets the ultimate credit. Good or bad Carey gets the credit or the blame, which is the same everywhere. In reality, none of us has any idea what is happening between the coaches and the players, other than what Carey occasionally says and what we see on the field. I recently questioned the QB coach based on the results on the field. Carey earned the heat on the starting QB decisions and the play-calling based on what we have seen on the field. Credit for Carey big-time for our players ready to play every game and they never quit, which has not always been the case under Carey. Those who supposedly know what they are doing do not want Carey, which for me ends the Carey debate.

Until Carey leaves, I fear a continued regression is inevitable.

You'll recall that Jordan Huff was prodded by the coaches to work harder in practice. It's not uncommon.

Yes and Carey often mentioned his practicing when he had a good game and when he did not get many carries. That seemed to be the rub between Carey and Huff. Game performance is usually reflective of practice and preparation, so I agree with Carey on that issue.

Here is a good Q&A with Eddie Carifio of the DeKalb Daily Chronicle in an Athens newspaper. I would definitely be pleased with a a 250 yard passing game by Childers.

Of all the teams in the MAC, included Turdledo, playing Ohio always makes me nervous for some reason.

I think Solich is a good enough coach to go at our weaknesses. So we struggle.

BTW haven't seen Dogfan in a little while. I'm hoping the end of the Ball State game didn't result in cardiac issues. Ball State fans were leaving and I was like, this game ain't over yet.

Here is the CFN news preview of the game. All the previews say pretty much the same things and pick NIU in a close game.

RE: NIU-Ohio odds
No big surprise:

First the obvious stuff from last week involved in-game injuries to starting QB Nathan Rourke, starting LT Joe Lowery and backup RB Julian Ross, as well as a day-before-the-game injury for backup RB Maleek Irons.

In addition to all of that, starting TE Connor Brown was held out of most of practice this week. And starting CB Jalen Fox did not play against Kent State because of injury.

That’s a lot of key players who were ‘questionable’ for most of the week.

The good news for Ohio is head coach Frank Solich expects most of that group to play, or at the least to be available. Solich has kept injury info closer to the vest than usual this week, but indicated late this week that Rourke, Lowery, Irons, Ross and Brown will be available on Saturday.
