Question on the BSU game with 10 minutes left
Need someone with real football chops to answer this. With about 10 minutes and us in the lead, I noticed DJ Brown on a play off to the sideline...the play was for no yards angled out of bounds. But it looked like DJ casually ran it out of bounds, I was thinking he could have dipped a shoulder and tried for another yerd, AND, KEPT THE CLOCK moving. I recall another similar event later, same effect.

With 10 minutes left and with a '2 score' lead, are coaches and players concerned with keeping the clock moving? What's the traditional coaching logic here?

I can't even figure out when they keep the clock moving. It seems completely inconsistent on out of bounds plays.

I never coached football, but I am sure this guy could give you the answer since he wrote a book about football clock management.

According to him you manage the game clock from the first play of the game. To me logically, since we have a good D and weak O we should look to shorten games; the less O plays the better. Back in the CH and JL years when we were scoring a boat load of points the hurry-up offense made sense; with that kind of high-powered O the more O plays the better. Now we should be doing the opposite.

Your question is with 10 mins. left and a 2-score lead should we looking to bleed clock. To me, if we start the 4th quarter with a 2-score lead we should be bleeding the clock the whole quarter (by staying in bounds, using most of the play clock, etc.), of course more aggressively as the clock winds down. Just my two cents with some logic from someone who knows this stuff.

Clock restarts even on out of bounds plays unless it’s within 2 minutes. So even if he dips out of bounds, the ref restarts the clock at the ready for play.

Maybe we scored more points because of the hurry up offense.

I miss the CH/JL days, those offense were awesome. My favorite? The 63-60 game over the Turds. What a game.

That's what I thought but I'm not sure that is consistently followed.

It usually is but I noticed some plays where it took longer for the ref to start the clock. Even needed some reminding by other officials. Almost like he was paying g attention if the clock was running or not.

One of the tv announcers questioned why Brown didn't go down inbounds too?

I think DJ was aware after the play that he should've stayed in bounds.

Correct. It can sometimes appear that way because they have to set the ball.

The same goes for injuries that are obviously sometimes of the off Broadway variety, namely by the defense. They aren't really saving the time on the clock but rather getting a breather.

We wear the O-line out by getting them set and then spending 10 seconds looking at the sidelines with the o-line in a set position, that get tiring on their legs.

It's kind of hard to watch, too.

RE: Question on the BSU game with 10 minutes left
Thanks for comments, did not recall the clock restart on out of bounds rule, but I recall it now!

I was gonna ask if trying to run plays that avoid the sideline limits the play book and makes it easier for the D to make stops, but if the clock isn't a real issue, that's not a concern.
