I would personally put Marshall in that top tier (and I wouldn't gripe too much about anybody that put ya'll first, champs until somebody knocks you off and all that). The NCAA tournament was great experience for your many returning players and the trip to the Caribbean should help the team to gel as well. But having said that... remember that we won our two regular season meetings last year by a combined 36 points. You won the tournament game by 1 point... Elmore did as much as he could do and our leading scorer Hollingsworth got smacked in the face early in that game and had to wear a mask. Really hurt him on both ends of the floor. If Elmore only scored his season average? You get swept. If Hollingsworth doesn't get injured? You get swept. You guys will be gangbusters on the threes but we have long, lean, athletic guards that can slow them down. And we will crush you in the paint. With all of the three point shooters Marshall can certainly beat us or anybody else on a given night. I don't mean to put your team down at all. I think Marshall will be quite good. But you can make a strong argument for WKU that does not hinge on "a single recruit".
Hollingsworth, Beardon, Anderson all back. Murray started for one of the best teams in the SEC last year. Banton is a stud. Everyone raves about Savage. Galen Smith is said to have stolen the show in summer work outs. WKU will be deep.

This strikes me as one of those picks to mix it up and try to not be obvious. Personally I would put UNT at #3. The CBI is good experience, a confidence booster, and gave them a lot of extra practice. They were the last CUSA team playing in March. They also did an out of country offseason tournament which will help them to gel I think. I like North Texas to get a bye and make a deep run in the CUSA tournament.
One thing that will be interesting with the new scheduling format... last year the top teams did not play even schedules. I do not think it was a coincidence that Marshall and WKU played the toughest conference schedules and it was those two playing for the title.
I think that the east was clearly better than the west last year. MTSU, post season flop notwithstanding, was the best team in the conference over the course of the season. Marshall was clearly pretty good. WKU went to the NIT final four. And Old Dominion finished above two of the afore mentioned teams in the regular season standings, I think they were pretty good as well.
Last season North Texas only played those four teams once each (and went 0-4). With the new formatting they will likely play the top teams (regardless of who those teams are) twice each (and maybe more). I wonder if they are ready for that? Those battles between the top eastern teams... I'm telling you that was big boy basketball. Dantoni himself credited CUSA for preparing his team for Wichita State. I think WKU, Marshall, and ODU will be somewhat better prepared for that because the east was BRUTAL last year. That's why I could see UNT finishing a little lower in the regular season standings, but by tournament time will be on par with their eastern counterparts experience wise.
Quote:and I think he underestimates Marshalls recruits,
I watched all three of Marshall's games in the Bahamas. The big guy you all got is strong and a space eater but I think he looked a bit slow. Even if they improve his conditioning I think he could spend a lot of time in foul trouble this season. We'll see.

You guys did not have a lot of depth in the post and from what I saw were a significantly weaker team without Peneva. He's a big blow. That is offset somewhat I think by the fact that you return so many of your players. There is no substitute for playing together for multiple years.
Quote:Just my two cents. We will see what happens but I believe Marshall is the favorite this season with an all american guard, and then a second one that's a starter nearly anywhere in Burks, and if not, we should have a pretty damn good league.
It's all just opinion at this point. I think this WILL BE a damn good league. AGAIN. Marshall, ODU, and WKU should all be at or near the top again... and several teams in the west could be improved as well. Should be a fun year.
