WOW.
Right, I know that's not saying much, but it made this one really sweet.

RE: Game Thread: La. Tech edition
So in comparing the defense so far this season with the Steel Shield team, I would say the following:
D-line play - Advantage Shield - You couldn't run on them for anything. Very seldom did they give up big plays.
LB play - Wash
DB play - Advantage Ice Dragons
Defensive Pressure - Advantage Ice Dragons
Other things to note: Schedule may have been a tad tougher on the Shield's team.
Regardless, good to see defense once again.

Defense is for real. The offense still needs work, but our defense will keep us in most games regardless.
Rice is a classic trap game. Hopefully we can avoid a letdown as the heavy favorite.
I'd love to see Street get some more carries. I know Brown is definitely the #1 guy, but it's not necessary to ask him to carry it 30 times when we have this depth at RB.

We played Butler around that time & they had the top RB in the nation at the time.
First play they gave it to him & we sacked him for about a 2 yard loss.
Pretty much had him under control the rest of the way.

We played Butler around '94 under Hilyer. Terry Dollerson ran a fumble or int back for a touchdown. They had a long win streak that we broke that day. Good times.
Steel Shield was around 98-2002

I might be thinking of the MTSU running back instead.
Actually in '93 UAB played Dayton & broke their 56 game regular season winning streak.

It was legitimately one of the best 2 or 3 defensive lines in the entire country, probably only behind the UNC team that had Julius Peppers and a 2nd 1st round draft pick on their Dline.
That edition of the NFL draft was on Saturday and Sunday. Perhaps it was just coincidence that in a year when no Bama players were expected to be drafted that high that the Friday before it the BOT issued its infamous "Black Friday" edict placing the UAB football program in great peril. I DO NOT believe in that coincidence.

Doh. I was even at that game. Sat under the deck and talked trash with the group of Dayton fans that were there.
Think we had beat Bammer earlier that year and then went to the tourney in '94. The year my oldest was born. Good days.

We have a very good DL this year, but the level of competition doesnt compare to the thomas and Freeman Steel Shield era. That Dline was dominant and shut down some very good teams. With the exception of Coastal Carolina, where they ran wild on us due to our over pursuing linebackers, this year is more of a Bend Until We Can Sack Em type defense. Not quite dominant, but nasty nonetheless. And a lot of fun to watch.
